Joy went to the pet shop back in the 70's to buy a kitten and came back with a tortoise. That was the start of her facination with them. She now has over 400 of them at her sanctuary in Cornwall.

Joy's first tortoise Bertie is now 40 years old and still going strong. Her numbers grew when friends and friends of friends brought their tortoises to her to look after while they went on holiday and never returned for them.

Now she has over 400 at her tortoise sanctuary in Cornwall. She even has one, Freddy who is 63 years old who follows her round as he used to go for a daily walk with his owner to the paper shop.
