Local surfers Ben Skinner, Alan Stokes and Sam Lamiroy have all progressed into the final rounds of the World Surfing Games in California. Alan Stokes said: "I don't think the American I was in the heat with was too pleased that I was stopping him from getting waves, but that could have been the difference between making it to the next stage or not." Sam Lamiroy was in a heat with an American surfer ranked 7th in the world. He said: "I have been finding it really hard to find good waves, but I have done all I can during my heat and it has been enough". "I have been surfing against some of the great surfing nations, such as South Africa, and knocked them out of the event, which is fantastic." Team manager, Paul Jeffery, from Newquay, said: "This contest is making history for British surfing. We are getting a lot of respect and it is great to know we are being watched back home and getting the support we need." The World Surfing Games can be watched live on the internet and during each heat the commentators have been reading emails sent from the UK to the British team. |
