The annual Rip Curl Boardmasters surf festival is underway at Fistral Beach in Newquay. The men's and women's five star surfing events got underway on Wednesday 3 August after two days of small surf conditions. There's also been plenty of action elsewhere at the festival for the massive crowd to enjoy, as well as hours of sunshine at Fistral Beach. | | The Boardmasters 2005 |
The first round of the Women’s event is scheduled to kick off proceedings, with some world class action from the likes of British surfer Robyn Davies and French ripper Marie-Pierre Abgrall. The Men’s event will follow showcasing the talents of some top locals from the British Professional Surfing Association tour. Top Brits Alan Stokes, Spencer Hargreaves and many more will lead the charge taking no prisoners in their bid to topple some international names such as Rip Curl riders Darren O’Rafferty. This year’s event is a 5 star World Qualifying Series event and as such offers the surfers the chance to earn some of the $100,000 prize purse from the early stages as well as valuable qualifying points towards a spot on the ASP World Championship Tour. | | Thouands flock to Fistral Beach |
On Tuesday 100s of people crowded round the mini ramp and watched in awe as Eastpack and Vans skate and BMX pros killed the ramp. Lee Blackwell, Ben Manual, Pete Marcell and Ronnie Callow took control to thunderous applause and cheers. Other entertainment at the beach this year includes the Trade Village with many bargains to be had, the Vans vert ramp profiling top skaters and BMXers in a thrilling competition.
