 David Braine
| | David Braine is the weather presenter on 'Spotlight' on BBC1 in the south west. When he ventures over the Tamar here are his Cornish choices...hemma po henna...this or that? |
1. Tresco or Bryher? Tresco definitely cos of the gardens. I'm a keen gardener and to see the exotic plants and the way the gardens have developed is wonderful. I have to say I also like Bryher, mainly for Hell Bay and the rough seas that always seem to be there. 2. East or west? West because for most of the year our weather comes from the west. We are at the front line here in Cornwall bearing the brunt of the weather about to hit the rest of the UK, there's nothing to the west of us but 3000 miles of open ocean. Cornish sunsets are also second to none because of our clean air. 3. St Michael's Mount or Lanhydrock House? St Michael's Mount, it just looks so unearthly sticking out of the water like a castle in mediaeval times. I'm sure there are lots of legends and myths surrounding it, and you can't fail to be impressed by the image as you approach Penzance. 4. Cinema or theatre? Cinema because I love a great film and with special effects and graphics today there is no fantasy that can't be seen on the big screen. I loved the Lord of The Rings films, with their fantastic sets and production, you almost felt like you were really there, pure escapism, great. Theatre leaves me cold, especially Shakespeare, call me uncultured if you like but I'd rather have a film then sit through theatre. 5. Sailing or surfing? I love both but sailing just pips it. There is something so fantastic about a free ride, and to think that when you sail you are doing something no different than the earliest of man's activities. The feel of the wind and the quietness of sailing with the fair breeze makes life all worth living, how can anyone not love sailing. Surfing is a real experience, it's us getting very close to nature and trying to harness the huge power of the waves, I'm not very good at it, but just one wave caught and ridden is a spiritual experience
you have to do it to understand. 6. Barbra Streisand or Frank Sinatra? Frank Sinatra every time, he had the voice, the style and the character and treated life as just a big game. You can hear in his songs that he really loved to sing and some of the true classic songs that we will be listening to in 100 years have come from him. Will we be listening to BS in 100 years time? 7. Cornwall County Rugby or Cornwall Village Cricket? Rugby of course it's Cornwall's game, it's steeped in tradition and the Cornish have such passion for the game and that it's treated as a family sport for all to watch. Cricket is good but if it's good enough for Cricket it's good enough to sail ! 8. Africa or India? Africa because of the wildlife and the scenery, it has the biggest variety of animals of any continent and to be able to see such a rich variety has always been one of my dreams. The climates of Africa are varied as well, from desert to snow capped mountain Africa has it all. India is interesting because of the people and the culture and again the geography is so vast but Africa definitely for the wildlife. 9.The Mermaid of Zennor or King Arthur? Arthurian legend still draws me into the mystery of days gone by, and when you look at the land and seascape of Cornwall it is so easy to imagine dragons and wizardry. 10. Up or down? Up of course, think positive things always look on the bright side
and remember surf's up ! |
