After leaving college, he picked up work on humour magazine Help!, where one of his photographic strips featured future Python John Cleese.

Following a move to England, he contributed animated features to Do Not Adjust Your Set and created Monty Python's Flying Circus' iconic cartoon sequences.

In 1975, he co-directed the group's feature film Monty Python and The Holy Grail with Terry Jones. He then took sole directing credit on the 1977 feature Jabberwocky.

A creatively rich career in Hollywood films ensued, Gilliam behind the camera for idiosyncratic fantasies such as Brazil, The Fisher King and Twelve Monkeys.

However, high profile failures The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and The Man Who Killed Don Quixote also established his reputation as an unreliable talent.

In 1993, an asteroid, 9619 Terrygilliam was named in his honour.
