He studied English at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he met future collaborator Richard Herring, while performing in revue group The Seven Raymonds.

In 1990, he won the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year, and in 1991 partnered up with Herring to write for BBC Radio Four's On The Hour.

The duo then went on to script and perform Lionel Nimrod's Inexplicable World, before creating Fist of Fun in 1993. The show transferred to BBC Two, to be succeeded by This Morning With Richard Not Judy.

In the late 1990s, Lee returned to solo stand-up, but took his career in a different direction writing Jerry Springer - The Opera, which debuted in 2002. 

When the production aired on BBC Two, he became the target for protests from Christians who considered the work blasphemous. The experience fuelled his subsequent stand-up show, 90s Comedian.
