MartinClunes![]() Born in Wimbledon in November 1961, the son of respected thespian Alec Clunes, this affably deep-voiced actor with a pliable, Toby Jug countenance is one of Britain's favourite comedy actors. Early theatre work suggested he may follow in his father's footsteps, but on television he flirted with the comedy genre in No Place Like Home and Jeeves and Wooster. Drafted in as support for the Harry Enfield vehicle Men Behaving Badly, he made the show his own when Enfield jumped ship. Subsequently, he amassed some notable film credits: directing and starring in Staggered and appearing in Shakespeare In Love. Latterly, his successes have been as a leading actor in mainstream drama roles, such as Doc Martin (produced by the company he set up with his wife, television producer Philippa Braithwaite). He has also performed with aplomb as both guest and host on Have I Got News For You.
