JulieWalters![]() According to a poll last year, Julie Walters is our 4th favourite screen star. This fact isn't startling, as Walters has been a star since she broke through in 1983, and with two Oscar nominations and three BAFTA wins to her credit, has made virtually every kind of film and TV acting her own. As Rita in Educating Rita she upstaged Michael Caine, sexy, gauche and bright all at once. She capitalized on that sexiness in Personal Services, but then developed a taste for playing older women such as Robert Lindsay's addled mum in GBH and Paul Reiser's mother in My Beautiful Son. Whilst she's best known now in films (as Molly Weasley in the Harry Potter films particularly) and major dramas - she utterly stole the show in the recent BBC period mystery The Ruby in the Smoke - Walters roots are in comedy. In creating the immortal Mrs Overall for Acorn Antiques, and the deliriously irritating Petula Gordino in Dinnerladies, she has given us roles for the ages.
