Matters kicked off in 1979 when the Comedy Store opened its doors and Sayle responded to an advert for "would-be comedians", becoming the club's first compere.

By 1981 he was the lead act at the new "Comic Strip" club, where he was among those spotted by producer Paul Jackson to star in "The Young Ones".

After playing multiple roles in "The Young Ones", during the 80s and early 90s Sayle also featured in several episodes of "The Comic Strip Presents" and took the starring role in Channel 4 sitcom "Paris".

He also had several sketch shows, the sketches often linked by the star delivering stand-up straight to camera as he stalked through suburban streets.

Since the late 90s, Sayle has concentrated on serious roles and writing. He is missed.
