Liverpool's Poor Form 利物浦的失常表现 | |||||||||||||||
Liverpool centre-back 中后卫 Jamie Carragher has spoken out 大胆的说出 about Liverpool's dip in form 水平下降 at the moment. Their 'form' is how well they are playing and 'a dip' means a downward movement. So 'a dip in form' basically means they have not been playing so well recently. The Premier League team has not been winning so many games and it has failed to take any major titles 没有能获得任何头衔. Just this weekend they were kicked out 被淘汰 of the FA Cup tournament, losing 1-2 to Championship team Barnsley at home 主场. Carragher believes their poor performance is quite a serious matter. He says, "I wouldn't call it a bad spell 低靡期 – it's been longer".
'A spell' is another way of saying in English 'a short period of time'. He implies 暗示 Liverpool can't make the excuse that they are just not playing well temporarily 暂时的 – he thinks it has been longer than just a short period of time. Carragher also says, "We realise we are not playing well enough. It's not a matter of putting your finger on 准确地指出 one reason. It's simply because we have not been good enough." In English, if you 'put your finger on' a reason or a problem, it means you identify what the reason or problem is exactly. Carragher explains that Liverpool's poor form is not a matter of putting your finger on the reason, or identifying the reason. The simple reason for it is, the team has not been playing well.
In the last seven league games 联赛比赛 Liverpool has played, it has only gained eight points and they are currently fifth in the Premier League, 19 points behind the leaders, Arsenal. This week they also face Italian side Inter Milan for the first leg 第一阶段 of their Champions League knockout match 淘汰赛. The Champions League is a tournament between the league teams 联赛队 in Europe, not the national teams. Liverpool won the Champions League in 2005. Inter Milan is a top Italian side and they are leading the Serie A 意大利甲级联赛 league by 11 points, so Liverpool face a tough 艰难的 game against them. "At every club there are ups and downs 起起落落 but we realise we are going to get a lot of criticism in the next few days – and rightly so", states Carragher.
'Ups and downs' means good times and bad times and Carragher implies the team is prepared for criticism. He thinks it is right that people criticise the team because it has not been performing well. He emphasises the importance of the Champions League this year to Liverpool, "We've got a massive 非常重大的 game coming up against Inter, so we are going to have to get over 恢复 this because the Champions League is massive for us now. It's the only thing we have left that we can win."
Massive means very big, so with the big, important game coming up against Inter Milan, Liverpool have to get over their worries about poor form. They have to put all their energy into the Champions League as it's the only thing they can now win this year. They have been knocked out of the FA Cup and they are too far behind in the Premier League to stand any chance 没有希望或可能 of winning.
