Pengpeng adapts to the British culture.

Our new blogger Pengpeng took her BA in Media Studies and MA in International Journalism at the University of Westminster in London. She has strong views on Chinese students in the UK.

Different people have different perceptions 感受 of studying abroad. Some can quickly adapt 适应 themselves to the new lifestyle and enjoy every single day in Britain, while others see the experience as an endless torture 折磨, counting down the days left to leave this country as soon as possible.

How come there is such a gap 差距 in between? I personally believe actively engaging yourself into the British culture can make your experience rich 丰富多彩 and fun.

In other words, having a positive attitude 积极的心态 is the next thing to tick in the box, after making sure you have sufficient 充足的 financial support.

The phenomenon ‘群居’现象

It is not hard for one to realise that Chinese people like to stick to 聚集 their own little community 小团体 overseas. Either at the university campus or the city shopping centre, you can often find them in groups, talking in Chinese and enjoying each other’s company 陪伴.

I guess that is mainly because being in the little circle can kill the loneliness 孤独,寂寞, offer help to each other, and most of all, save all the trouble that you have to face in communicating in English with non-Chinese.

That is why so many students’ English level hardly got improved even though spending much money and time abroad.

In addition, some students want to be isolated 被隔离 from the outside world, because they hold a negative attitude 消极的态度 towards anything that is foreign to them.

They complain the bus system is not as convenient 方便的 as it is in China or the food here is not nice. If it is such an unhappy experience, maybe studying abroad is not the right choice for them in the first place 最初,起先.

Do in Rome as the Romans do 入乡随俗

Now that you know the very fact that you are living in a foreign country, you should have certain expectations 预料,期望 that there must be something different for you to adjust to 调节,适应. It is all about opening yourself up and adapting yourself to the new environment.

Now I would like to ask all the Chinese students who are on their way to the UK: are you independent 独立的 and open-minded 想开明的 enough to study abroad? Studying abroad is more than just spending a certain amount of time and money.
