Beckham welcomed to LA by the mayor

Ticker tape 彩色纸带 flew into the sky as a large crowd of reporters and supporters chanted his name at the club's stadium.

Beckham says he’s excited about starting training 训练。 When he says that potentially 有潜在可能的 soccer could be as big in America as other places in the world, he means at the moment it’s not a very popular sport in the USA. But because it is a sport-loving nation, he thinks he can help change that.

When Beckham made his first reference to the game he plays he said "foot.." before correcting himself and saying "soccer". Americans use the word 'soccer' because they have their own game called football. In Britain we call this 'American Football' ‘美式足球’。

LA Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas said the arrival of Beckham was an historic moment 历史时刻。

He says this because he hopes Beckham’s high profile 引人注目的 will generate enough interest in football to make it as popular as baseball, basketball, American football and ice hockey in the United States.

Beckham's first appearance for the Galaxy is a friendly 友谊赛 against Premier League side Chelsea on 21 July.
