Sun Haining wins the BBC Learning English and Nanjing Music Radio English-speaking competition

Congratulations to Sun Haining

During the China Tour BBC Learning English ran a competition with Nanjing Music Radio.

The competitors had to write a composition in English and then record a speech in English. The finalists had to give a live speech at Nanjing University and answer the judges' questions.

Meet Sun Haining, a journalism student at Nanjing University. She is the winner of our English-speaking competition held in Nanjing in March.

Her prize is to spend two weeks in the UK this summer where she will study English and get the opportunity to produce a radio programme in London with the BBC Learning English team.

So let's get to know her in her own words...

Sun Haining
Hello, I’m Sun Haining from School of Journalism and Communication, Nanjing University, China.

I was born and raised in a medium-sized city in the northwestern part of China, faraway from Nanjing. Though regarded as less developed, my hometown is very dear to me and has really become a part of my character.

My parents are still living in my hometown. My father is a professor in a local university and lectures on psychology and my mother is an English teacher in middle school. They’ve given me a significant influence.

In daily life I’m mostly an easy-going person. Friends describe me as funny and cunning, and I really love being with them. But I also like to be alone.

Having been a most devoted fan of Liverpool Football Club, Colin Firth and Shakespeare for years, I find myself very satisfied to be immersed in a world of books, movies and music and sports.

I always hold a belief in miracles, just as Liverpool’s magical six minutes in Istanbul. My team taught me that if you have a dream, you should never give up, and this is exactly what rings in my head in the competition on March 28th.

It was fortunate for me to have overcome my fear, and I think I did even better than my best. I was so overwhelmed when the result was announced, because my fellow competitors were so great and professional that day.

And I felt so happy that my friends were there celebrating with me and sharing my joy. This is a great chance for me to fulfill my long standing dream of visiting Britain and advancing my English. I’ll have a glimpse of the world beyond my own for the first time.

Wow - that’s so fantastic!
