![]() The BBC's John Escolme spoke to Guo Xiaolu in London Meet Guo Xiaolu The Chinese novelist and filmaker Guo Xiaolu has been in London to promote her novel A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary For Lovers.
Although this is the first time she has written a novel in English, her book has been very well-received by the critics and public. In fact, the novel has been shortlisted in the UK for the Orange Prize - a literary award. BBC Learning English producer John Escolme spoke to Guo Xiaolu about her career as a writer and her experiences learning and writing in English. In the first part of the interview she talks about her latest novel and why she wrote it in "broken english". John asks her what the novel is about.
In the second part of the interview Gua Xiaolu talks about her own life - how she left her village in China and studied film-making in Beijing before coming to London. She also talks about the differences between the English and Chinese languages.
