Neil: Hello, this is Real English from BBC Learning English, I’m Neil.

Helen: And I’m Helen. Hello!

Neil: In Real English, we look at words and phrases that you might not find in your dictionary.

Neil: Today’s expression is one-hit wonder – one-hit wonder.

Neil: Well a one-hit wonder is a band or a singer who just have one big hit. They are only famous for one big song and they usually don’t have any other successful songs.

Helen: OK,one-hit-wonder

Neil: Shall we play you some?

Helen: Oh go on then Neil – give us an example.

Neil: Well back in the 1960s – Ricky Valence was a one-hit wonder with his song Tell Laura I Love Her.

Insert

A: I really like that modern version of the Elvis song…erm…A Little Less Conversation

B: Oh yeah, I like that too. That was a band called JXL – they were a bit of a one-hit wonder, weren’t they?

Neil: And that’s today’s expression – a one-hit wonder.

That’s all for today. You’ve been listening to BBC Learning English.

Neil: Join us again soon for more Real English. Bye.

Helen: Bye!
