The script of this programme

Hull
A typical day on the streets of Hull
Jo: You're listening to On The Town from BBC Learning English. Now today Jean, I thought I would introduce my home town to everyone.

Jean: Your home town? Where is that then?

Jo: Well it's a place called Hull. I spoke to Karen who has lived in the city on and off for a number of years.

Jean:

Jo: Where in Britain is Hull and how many people live there?

Insert

Hull's on the east coast of Britain, it's on the edge of the river Humber which leads out to the North Sea. It's about 200 miles north of London. Its full title is Kingston-Upon-Hull although most people refer to it as Hull or 'ull if you're local.

Jo: So Hull is on the east coast of Britain.

Jean:

Jo: On the edge. On the edge of the River Humber which leads out to the North Sea.

Jean:

Jo: It's about 200 miles north of London.

Jo: Yes the city is actually called Kingston-Upon-Hull but most people call it Hull. However, the local people...

Jo: This is On The Town from BBC Learning English and today we're talking all about my home town Hull.

Jo: It's a distinct accent. Listen to Karen talk about the Hull accent. What does she say 'mafted' means?

Insert

We have phrases that are used here in Hull that probably travel 10-15 miles outside of the city and people wouldn't actually understand what you were actually talking about. For example 'mafted' which means warm, or too warm. I think it's about the vowel sounds really – very long flat vowels like er ner for oh no. It's definitely a very distinct accent.

Jo: So Karen says there are phrases used in Hull that would not be understood maybe 10 or 15 miles out of the city.

Jo: You can identify a Hull accent from the vowel sounds.

Jean:

Jo: So oh would be pronounced 'er'. People pronounce my name Jer not Jo in my home town.

Now finally Hull is also a town known for its sport. Liam is also from Hull and he is a big sports fan. Here's some language to help you understand what he says. Decent.

Jean: Decent

Jo: He talks about a league.

Jean:

Jo: An arch-rival.

Jean:

Jo: How many famous teams are there in Hull?

Insert

The famous teams in Hull – football you've got Hull City, they're a pretty decent team and in ice hockey you've got Hull Stingrays. In rugby you've got Hull KR . Hull KR play in the the Superleague – the Superleague's the best league in rugby and Hull FC – they're Hull KR's arch-rivals. It means they hate each other.

Jo: So there are four famous sports teams in Hull: a football team, Hull City; two rugby teams, Hull Kingston Rovers and Hull FC; and there's even an ice hockey team, Hull Stingrays.

Jo: You've been listening to On The Town from BBC Learning English. You can learn about more places in London and around the UK if you log on to our website www.bbcchina.com.cn and go to the On The Town section. That's all for today – see you next time.

Jean: Bye!
