Why is the weekend so important to the British? They always like to ask each other about weekend plans, this is different from China.   Lina Tian, Chongqing

On Fridays in a British office you often hear people ask each other about their weekend plans - 'What are you planning to do over the weekend, John?' Or 'what are you up to this weekend, Jacki?'

All this weekend talk leaves Lina with the impression that the British are far more interested in, and serious about, their weekends. But she wonders why this is so?
