I hear a lot about the diversity of British culture, but what does that really mean?   Xiaoning Wang, Beijing

It is hard to know what to expect when you visit a country you are unfamiliar with.

If you are visiting from China for the first time, Britain can be an amazing experience, but in a society where so many different cultures live side by side it’s difficult to understand what sort of a place Britain really is.

Is it all about serious men wearing bowler hats, drinking tea, eating bacon and eggs, and playing cricket? For some people the answer is yes, although you would find it hard to find a man wearing a bowler hat these days!

The Britain of 2006 is just as much about eating food from Africa or Italy, or being with friends with people who come from the other side of the world, as it is about doing things which might seem “typically British.”
