Hetty Feather's Diary: Trust

My name's Hetty Feather - and this is my diary.

We’ve found the Dawn Star! But that’s not the end of the story! Now we need Master Ashok to work out who to trust. I felt so bad the way I shouted at him earlier – it could have lost me my job. But when I realised that he’d tested us, I was so angry, it just burst out. It wasn’t nice of me at all, or kind. I suppose when I realised that Lady Grenford was involved, it seemed like we couldn’t trust him either.

Agnes feels the same way about Flo. She tried to help her as a friend, but Flo just threw it back in her face. No wonder Agnes was happy to discover the Dawn Star with us. At least she knows we’re her real friends. She covered for Flo in front of the Calendars even though Flo didn’t expect it. That’s what being friends is all about - being honest and caring for people. That’s what I believe. I just hope Master Ashok believes the same.

But now we’ve found the Dawn Star, how do we show him that we’re his friends and that Lady Grenford isn’t? I suppose we have to prove it – but who knows if Master Ashok will believe us? After all, Lady Grenford is so grand he’ll always believe her over us, even over Master Edwin. I just hope he comes to his senses and realises how awful she is, just like we did.

I've finished my duties at Calendar Hall for now, so I've written some responses to your messages. Thank you so much for writing to me!

Hetty Feather Diary replies: Arthi: Trust is feeling you can get when you are close to someone. Knowing who to trust is complicated but when it is true trust you will feel it and it will be kind of easier to know, I guess. Hetty Feather: Dear Arthi, Thanks for your letter. I know that I can trust Gideon – because we’re so close to each other! Like you say, it’s more difficult with someone new. Perhaps that’s why Flo is harder to trust - because we don’t know her as well as everyone else! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather Diary replies: Book reader dancer: I know how to trust because trust goes both ways. If the other person trusts you and helps you in any tough situation, you know you can trust them. Hetty Feather: Dear Book reader dancer, Thanks for your letter. When you’re in a tough situation, you always turn to those you trust! That’s a really good way of realising who matters to you. You’re right - the important part is knowing they can trust you too! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather Diary replies: jubjoy7: It can be hard to know who to trust! Sneaky people like Lady Grenford always know how to persuade people. I know who to trust, by doing tests (like Ashok did) but also to see who is loyal or not. I'm sure Ashok will trust you - after all, you’re his friend, and friends stick together. Hetty Feather: Dear jubjoy7, Thanks for your letter. I don’t know anyone who likes a sneak! But it’s true that they persuade people to believe their ideas. That’s what’s annoying and unfair – we’re Ashok’s friends but Lady Grenford makes him believe that we’re not! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather Diary replies: OutdoorsyErin I know who to trust not by spying on them, but by seeing how they keep promises, how they help me when I am down, and how they always tell the truth. Then I know I can confide in them. I think you need to tell Ashok about what happened last time with Lady Grenford, and how she only wants to gain his trust, not make a real friendship with him. Hetty Feather: Dear OutdoorsyErin, Thanks for your letter. I agree – I wouldn’t spy on anyone, that feels sneaky! But you can tell a lot about someone by how they treat you back. I hope Master Ashok would listen to us – if Lady Grenford doesn’t get there first! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather Diary replies: penguinlover1: You could try to listen to everyone's tone of voice, but if that doesn't work, you could just think about that person's character. For example, you would probably trust Gideon more than Lady Grenford. Hetty Feather: Dear penguinlover1, Thanks for your letter. The way someone speaks to you often says a lot about who they are! We should all respect others and talk to everyone fairly. That’s how Gideon and I behave – but Lady Grenford certainly doesn’t! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather Diary replies: phoenixlegend If I do not know who to trust, if I had time I would sit and think about what each of them have said and done for me but if I was Ashok and I did not have enough time I would hold on to the Dawn Star because no-one can be trusted yet. Hetty Feather: Dear phoenixlegend, Thanks for your letter. Sitting down and having a good think is always a good idea! I hope that’s exactly what Master Ashok does. We’ve been good friends to him and that’s what matters the most – he can always trust us! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather Diary replies: StarstoneBaseballSinger: First of all, congratulations for finding the Dawn Star. It must have been worth all the hard work. Finding who to trust can be difficult especially if people may have hurt you or if they are persuasive, like Lady Grenford. However, you can gain trust by being kind and helpful and just being a good friend. Hetty Feather: Dear StarstoneBaseballSinger, Thanks for your letter. Knowing who to trust can sometimes be difficult! It’s especially not easy with Lady Grenford. Looking for the Dawn Star as a team made me realise that at least we can trust each other! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather Diary replies: U17681074: You know who to trust if you know them well, for example, if they have been nice to you, you should trust them but if they are horrible then don’t. You can’t really truly tell who to trust but this is a general guide of how to know who to trust. Hetty Feather: Dear U17681074, Thanks for your letter. Trusting someone is a bit like being friends – you know when it’s right! It’s important that friends support each other, of course. That’s why I have good friends at Calendar Hall – we work as a team every day! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather Diary replies: U17721589: Trust cannot be demanded. It has to be earned. Ashok is probably confused right now for he is missing home, giving Lady Grenford the chance to brainwash him. Knowing who to trust can be difficult because people can put a fake mask over who they really are. Hetty Feather: Dear U17721589, Thanks for your letter. Master Ashok must be missing home – it’s so far away! Perhaps that’s why Lady Grenford can convince him. We’ve worked so hard to find the Dawn Star; we’ll all be relieved once it’s back where it belongs! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Hetty Feather Diary replies: U17726417: Tell Master Ashok what Lady Grenford is doing to you and tell him your really trying to help him. Hetty Feather: Dear U17726417, Thanks for your letter. I’d love to tell Master Ashok – but if he doesn’t believe us, I could end up in trouble! It’s so difficult to know what to do. I just hope that one day Master Ashok knows that we’re his real friends – because we are! Yours, Hetty Feather.
