Our very own 'nutty professor', Dina Mufti, has been hard at work in the lab - creating some fun experiments for you to try at home!

Dina and her willing assistants!
Dina and her assistants!

Dina's assistants for the day were three-year-old Laura and eight-year-old Christopher. Follow the instructions below and our budding scientists will show you how to have fun with our simple experiments!

Print out this page, then take a look at our picture gallery to see Laura and Christopher conducting the experiments!

Build a real working volcano!

volcano erupts!

You will need:
• baking soda
• washing-up liquid
• red food colouring
• vinegar
• a small container (like a camera-film canister)
• plasticine or paper mache formed into volcano shape

Step 1: Build your volcano model around the container - this is your crater! Put your volcano on a tray - or something which will collect the lava!

Step 2: Fill container with baking soda, then add a few drops of washing-up liquid. This makes the lava bubble!

Step 3: Add the red food colouring to make your lava glow!

Step 4: Pour in some vinegar and watch your volcano erupt!

Step 5: See Christopher's volcano erupt in our photo gallery »

Remember to get an adult to help you with these experiments. And make sure you clean up afterwards - a good scientist always keeps his laboratory neat and tidy!
