Have Your Say

So, you're a fan of Wisbech, are you? Tell us what's great about it, and we'll share it with the rest of the county!

Wisbech is basicly the drugs capital of the fens, seriously. The town used to be nice but as a young adult growing up here, i'd have to say its all going to the pan. The flood of foreign workers has alienated them from everyone else, they have theyre own shops and housing areas in the town. Theres nothing here for outsiders, no need to come to Wisbech if you don't live here. I'd personally love to leave, regardless of the historic buildings and rich history.

The Photos do not do Wisbech Justice, Some of the comments made I wonder which world do some of the writers live in. Get real guys.

I studied at the Isle of Ely College in 1978 and left in 1979. I have not been back to the college since I left. Can anybody tell where I can share the photo of the college. Thanks!

Abboo
I am a foreigner who studied at the isle of ely college of horticulture and further education, wisbech in the 70s. Wonder what has happened to the college since I could not find anymore information on it and neither could i locate it on the map. Can somebody help, please.

Fraser Chalmers
many happy memories of Wisbech and Isle of Ely College, early 80s. It'll always be more appealing than the many urban sprawls around - great atmosphere there, especially in the height of summer - hoping to get back down this year

martin

I had liked to see other more interesting photos here. I dont know anything of Wisbech and profiting I am in a close town by some days, I would like to visit it,however showing photos only of streets at night doesnt look very interesting. I am sure your town has nice things to enjoy.

The trouble with Wisbech is the people, most think the CASTLE and the PECKOVER are pubs.90% have never seen these wonderful places except on BBC plays

Martha Menestrina
I spent a month at the International Student Camp (Camp Leverington?) the summer of 1967. I had a great time picking gooseberries. No one in the USA knows what gooseberries are, so my experience was truly unique.

Born and raised to the age of eight in the town of Wisbech, there are many amenities you'll find convenient, with wonderfully friendly people. All these years later there have been many trans-atlantic trips to visit the quaint town and the not to far Sandringham, forests, beaches, castle ruins, lavender fields and surrounding countryside. It's a place dear to my heart. Visit.... you'll love it too!! THE UK ROCKS!!

Susana
I love Wisbech!I am portuguese but i lived there for 2 years i relly loved. I do miss be there. Is a beutiful city, I do love really!

I was stationed at RAF Marham in1950. Visited Wisbech often and loved the quaint town square and the pubs and found the people more than nice and the young ladies the most attractive of any where i ever visited. England was a proud and noble nation, and nowhere was it more evident than your town....an ex GI(Yank)

I also spent a couple of glorious summers at the international farm caamp in Leverington.I remember the Six ringers well and working in Smedleys factory.Had a wonderful time.

Wisbech. It's an absolutely beautiful place. I've lived here for three years and thank goodness, haven't met any of these horrible people mentioned yet! Haven't encountered any of the problems listed either? Great place to live but please keep it a secret we don't want it to become too overcrowded.

Jimbob
Ahh alex I've lived in Wisby all me life and ain't never been on the underground, but I've ridden a few donkies......to Kings Lynn

Sue
As a Wisbechian 1944-1966 I think Frank Trundall missed the point that Julian makes."Backwoods" does not mean "backward" but it certainly fitted the Wisbech I knew (and loved?)Up here in Sheffield I keep trying to restore Thomas Clarkson's rightful place in history, ie NOT in Wilberforce's shadow!

Kerstin
I´ve never been in Wisbech but these wonderfull pictures are a great motivation to go there!

Frank Trundle
Bad luck Julian if you found your way to Spalding. Us Wisbekistanis may be a bit 'backwood' but our spelling is generally impeccable.

holly
wooooooo!! i live in wisbech!!and have done all my live for 14 years. its alright not much to do tho, but them pic make it look really cool.

Alex
Wisbech can be seen as an alright market town to the untrained eye... although anything illegal will and does happen on the underground

Paul Moebis
I left Wisbech back in 1969 at the age of 10, but I remember that it was a great place to be a child in the 60´s. I liked the river and the old houses, and the Castle was a place of mystery, the same as the Roman Wall. The Empire Theatre was great for Saturday Mornings. The park was lovely, especially in the autumn with lots of conkers. Hunstanton and Castle Rising were our Sundy favourites, along with Ely. Loads of fond memories, but I gather there are lots of problems, nowadays. A pity, as it´s a very nice town.

Jade Sykes
I live in wisbech and i find it appaling. The neighbours are all foreign and they play loud music at nights. The litter is terible and nobody is polite

Julian
I drove through Wisbech by mistake once on my way to Spalding, I asked a man in the high street how do I get to Spalding and he replied 'you gotta pretty mouth boy' it reminded me of the film 'Deliverance' its backwoods country!

penny
i wouldnt live here if i was you its a dumping ground cant get a job anywhere! Theres rubbish everywhere and u do get alot of people who r not friendly in town. thats my veiw on the town thats why im moving!

Sue Wooderson
Having read some of the comments from other people re Wisbech, I dread to think what they would have made of the part of North London we escaped from! After 24 years, finding no one else spoke English it was a pleasure to move to somewhere really nice!

Sue Wooderson
After almost 7 years we love living here. Would never go back to London and dread the odd journey we have to make there. The local people are friendly, it is great for a quick run to the coast and the pace of life suits us perfectly.

vika
I'm going to live here in Wisbech with my family. It was interesting to see some beutifull fotos and to read different opinions about this town. I hope I'll have wonderfull time here...

merili
I love wisbech and I miss there back, because it´s so small but beautiful town.

Jason Glidden Turner
As a Wisbechman born & bred, left a few times but always came back, I get sick of people who say horrible things about the town, Wisbech has a lot going for it, its people who spoil it but its great that there are some who like this town as I do!

bob geldof
what is wrong with you people have u ever been to wisbech for any period of time? trust me u dont want to, its a waste of time. one time the army set up camp at the queen school as a way to stop the travellers having gang wars. there are often fights in the streets and drug dealers are easily found and muggings are common however the streets do have a homely quality and have been the setting of the famous "david copperfield" (a film based on charles dickens's book) so i think visiting wisbech is a life changing experience and should be enjoyed by all

Iver
I spent two seasons at the international student camp at Leverington, in 1975 and 76. And I have glorious memories of numerous drunken nights at the Six Ringers Pub. Hope to be back one day to see if it´s still there?

Gaffa Mondo
Left Wisbech in 1999 to study illustration in Blackpool, and settled with a family there. Really miss Wisbech for all its backwards ways, and amazing skyscapes. Don't get back as often as I'd like, but always check out the museums when I'm over that way.

Derek Bond
the best part of Wisbech is the fantastic Classic car club and the annual classic car road run to Peterborough and back this year on Aug.14 starting from StPeters car park 0900

Larry McMaster
My wife's family is from Wisbech and we have visited there 4 times since 1998. It is a lovely town and I love the historical buildings and the people. They are all so friendly. I am from Rockford, Illinois USA

Jess
Wow, these photographs make Wisbech look somewhat decent. I like your work, especially how you've been able to change the shear poor quality of Wisbech!

Jack Simpson
Never been to Wisbech but went through Cambridge once and stayed out jail so that made me happy....I am from Vancouver, BC...FWIW. I really like these pictures and found them via a link in the Amateur Photographer (Magasine) Forums. Cheers from the Wet Coast of Canada. :D Jack Simpson
