Aloysius - bear-faced blogger: Part four

George the teddy bear is preparing for the role of his life - starring as Aloysius in St John's Players' production of Brideshead Revisited. Welcome to his regular bear-blog - a no holds barred look at life from a bear's-eye point of view...

Part four - 9th October 2007: A bear with no lines? Nooo! It can't be true!

Hallooooo! Well, here we are again – another exciting week in the theatrical world. My goodness, it is all getting s-o-o exciting, but I started out in rather a subdued mood. If you remember, I was in disgrace with my owner for attacking a member of the cast who had grossly humiliated me by sticking a Yoda mask on me in front of my beloved Olive (my owl girl-friend). I had been frog-marched (or bear-marched) home and left in a plastic bag in the spare room as punishment for my misdeeds.

After a day or two, Olive came looking for me and picked me up in her talons by the scruff of the neck and flew me out of the spare room and into the garden. Aha! I thought – Olive has forgiven me, and she is now after a bit of canoodling in the bushes. Big mistake! She swooped over the garden with me and promptly let me go, right over the bird bath. “That’ll teach you!”, she twitted in an icy tone. Here, you can see me, bottom first, plonked in the said bird bath. Is there to be no end to my humiliation?

My owner, after much sniggering and pointing, finally picked me up and left me, bottom up, to dry in the sun. Can we please now close this unfortunate chapter? Thank you.

George Bear and Lucy

Lucy - George's new 'squeeze'!

Back to the play – weeellllll! I have fallen in love – again! Here you can see me with Lucy, the lady playing Julia Flyte, and a most charming lady she is, too. She plays my beloved Sebastian’s sister, so, whilst Olive is giving me the cold shoulder (or cold wing, in her case), I am JULIA’s! Pity she hasn’t got furry ears like me, I’m quite fond of those – Olive has furry ears….sigh!

George at the wheel of his hot rod!

On Saturday, we had an “away-day”! I was taken to a local manor house and a gentleman brought along the old car that Julia’s leaning against for some photographs to be taken. The car, an Austin 7, was born in 1930 (that’s even older than my owner, the director), and you can see me here driving it. It was so exciting! The car’s owner started to turn a funny pale colour when he saw me behind the wheel, from jealousy, I expect, as I look most dashing, I’m sure you agree.

Here you can see me with Colin, who plays Charles Ryder’s father called, er, Mr Ryder. He also plays Rex Mottram, a sophisticated Canadian, who buys a tortoise for Julia. Rex likes animals, I can tell. You can see him here gazing lovingly into the eyes of said tortoise, though I heard him say, “If this one dies, can another tortoise be put in its shell?” Charming.

Mr Ryder and the tortoise

Hang on……another animal in it? I thought I was the only one? What’s going on? I have been assured that it was not a real tortoise. Though I overheard someone say about me, “Well, he’s not a real bear”. What do they mean?

George and the walking stick

Here, you can see me with “Kurt’s crutch”. This is a part of the play where Sebastian is in Morocco with his German friend, Kurt, who is limping with the aid of said crutch. Kurt had walked off stage (perfectly normally) by the time this photo was taken. (So what happened to his limp, then? I was told this is what “acting” is. Pretending. I can do that…..I could be Kurt.) Unfortunately, my legs weren’t quite as long as “Kurt’s” so, after dangling in mid-air for a split second, the crutch collapsed under me. Perhaps I’ll stick to being Aloysius, after all.

The play’s only three weeks away and I haven’t learnt my lines yet. Come to that, I haven’t had my reading lessons, yet. Come on, Ms Director, I have whole speeches to learn, a romantic scene, a dying scene……haven’t I? Please?

Byeeeeeeeeee! Love George xxxxx

George Bear (aka Aloysius)
Dear RuthOlive will soon come winging back to me when she realises that I'm out EVERY NIGHT next week seeing another woman (beloved Lucy playing Julia). A few dark nights on her own should do the trick....Love George xxx

Ruth
George, I'm sorry to hear that your affaire with Olive isn't going too well. Lets hope your friends in the play can make up for it :-)
