The Great Snail Race!

The 5th biennial snail racing championships are set to take place on July 14th in the village of Snailwell (where else?) - as one of the highlights of the Snailwell Summer Fete...

Snailwell Summer Fete and Snail Race - Saturday July 14th, 12 noon at the Paddock Centre, Snailwell

If 21st century life can sometimes get a bit hectic for you, slow down with a trip to Snailwell's Summer Fete this July, where the pace is set by the humble garden snail.

The race takes place on a board painted with two red circles for the snails to start and finish their race, with conditions dictating the speed of these unlikely sporting heroes. Theories vary as to what makes a good racing snail, but the favourites seem to be the speckled garden snail, reaching speeds of up to 55 yards per hour!

Previous champions have been sponsored by local businesses for as little as £5 a snail - if you would like to join the fun and sponsor a snail, please e-mail Charles Richmond, and remember to include the colour you'd like your snail to be! Sponsorship money can be paid on the day.

The fete also includes white elephant, tombola, pick-a-bottle and produce stalls. All proceeds go towards the day to day running of St Peter's Church.
