Frobisher’s Gold (or Elizabeth the First Had Black Teeth)

When a pirate-turned-explorer called Martin Frobisher discovers a new land in the Arctic (and with it, a remarkable gold-bearing ore he calls ‘Black Earth’), Elizabeth I glimpses a very golden future...

The Details...

Frobisher's Gold is a Menagerie Theatre Production starring Janet Suzman and Terry Molloy and co. Written by Fraser Grace and Directed by Paul Bourne

Thurs 19th October - Sat 21st Oct 2006 at The Junction, Clifton Way, Cambridge CB1 7GX at 8pm - Tickets £11 (£8.25 concessions), Box Office 01223 511511

"Phenomenally enjoyable... absolutely compelling theatre"
The Evening Standard (on Menagerie's Gifts of War)

The Queen has a vision in which England at last rivals Spain in wealth, prestige and influence. And with Frobisher’s idealistic business partner, William Crowe, charming her socks off with tales of the exotic, singing ‘Esquimaux’ who live there, Elizabeth invests heavily to bring ‘Civilisation to the natives’, and their assets home to England. Hurrah!

But, just hours later, Elizabeth begins her own journey into a frozen wilderness... and the stage is set for a remarkable adventure!

Blending history, comedy, politics and personal foibles in the court of (the not yet legendary) Queen Elizabeth I, Frobisher’s Gold is a comedy of manners on ice; a fantastical journey in which a Queen’s twin impulses toward exploration and exploitation, meet a spurned woman’s equally conflicting drives for pity and vengeance.

A headless body, and a man who turns into a walrus, merely add to the glorious mixture of comedy and pathos before England’s Imperial course is finally regained, and only Elizabeth’s teeth remain on edge…
