Knitting wool

Knit Cafe opens in Cambridge!

Knitting has made a come-back in celebrity circles... but it's not just Hollywood stars who are enjoying the latest trend for knitting! 'Knit One, Give One', Cambridge's first ever 'knit cafe' has opened at Emmanuel United Reformed Church...

Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz is a celebrity knitter!

Knitting has enjoyed a bit of a resurgence recently with the likes of Julia Roberts, Kate Moss, Cameron Diaz and even Russell Crowe picking up the needles to 'knit one, pearl one'!

'Knit Cafes' have become popular throughout Europe and North America, and now Cambridge has opened its very own! 'Knit One, Give One' opens every Thursday from 2-4pm at Emmanuel United Reform Church on Trumpington Street and welcomes knitters of all ages to come together and knit for charity.

Anna Briggs
Anna Briggs, Founder

Founder Anna Briggs says she thought that as well as knitting for family and friends it would be a good idea to knit for other people too. Knitters are invited to make garments for a charity which regularly sends warm clothing to Kosovo and other needy places.

"I heard that a knit cafe had opened in Oxford and thought there better be one in Cambridge!"
Anna Briggs, founder of the Knit Cafe

Knitters can bring their own yarn, needles and patterns, or they can use supplies that have already been donated to the cafe... Founder Anna was delighted at the turnout for the opening of the cafe and is thinking of running a knit cafe in the evening which would be more suitable for those who work during the day.

There are plenty of adverts that mock hand-made knitted garments - the annual Christmas jumper from Aunty Maude, or the knitted toilet-roll cover from Granny - and although knitting is thought of as something 'grannies' do, it has become popular again thanks to a number of Hollywood stars.

Enjoying the knit cafe

The knitters at the cafe said they thought that the stars probably have a lot of spare time on set and that knitting is very therapeutic. So whilst it's relaxing, it's also very satisfying to be making something.

The knitters at the opening were making hats, but they've also made jumpers, scarves and other garments.. They said there are some great yarns around these days with a huge range of colours and patterns, and that people should come along and try it...

Ted knits for the first time in his life!
Ted knits 'two rows of chaos!'

And it isn't just women who are having a go! Not to be beaten by Russell Crowe, Ted was at the cafe's opening and it was the first time he'd ever knitted in his life! Although he admitted that he'd produced two rows of chaos, when asked if it was something that men couldn't do, he replied "that's nonsense!"

Jan Nicholls, Community Development Director at Emmanuel United Reformed Church where the cafe is held, says that the church has a programme where it tries to interact with the community: "The knit cafe is an opportunity for people to knit for others and it's also a support network."

As the knitters at the cafe said... "once you learn, you never forget!" So why not give it a try? For more information call Anna on 01223 835542.

Is knitting just for grannies? What do you think?

I've taught elementary/middle school for a few years and many of my students have shared an enthusiasm for knitting. And to my great surprise my best knitter was a very macho 12-year-old boy. He said his grandmother was a very accomplished knitter with no female grandchildren so he had to learn. He didn't seem to regret it though; he said it improved his dexterity for sports and video games!

No No No Knitting is for every one. Doing something with your hands also keeps the mind busy. How I wish we had a knitting cafe here in Canada.

Lucy Baker
No way, it is not just for grannies! I have just started knitting and and it's a cool way to relax and de-stress! It's also a fabulous way to create original creations. I am into knitting using recyled materials (old carrier bags, cut up t-shirts, unravelled previously-worn jumpers, etc!) Knitting rocks!

louise walker
i have been knitting since i was about ten im now 38 and still knitting

Emma Lamb
I'm 27 and was taughtto knit by my Gran when I was a kid. I still knit now and I'm making a cardigan for my 6 month old baby. Knitting is not for grannies, and even if it was, I'll probably be a granny one day way!!!! Keep those needles clicking!

Anita Bracey-Wright
Knitting has been passed down through out family fro generations. I was five when my mother taught me to knit. I am now 36 with four children and have never had to buy a knitted garment.

Susan Spencer
I found your site while searching for wool shops in Cambridge. I have knitted since childhood, and used to make all of my family's jumpers, hats and scarves from the best quality wool. Nowadays, it is so hard to buy wool or patterns, and cheap wool garments abound in the shops. I would love to see the general return of handknitting - well done and good luck with your project!

Nomie
I love knitting and have been knitting since i was 5.I think it's a great way to unwind and looking at the end result is always so fulfilling.Knitting is definately for everyone!

Jenny Bailey
I have always loved knitting. There are so many fantastic designers out there making amazing patterns and yarn, that it's hard to think of handknitting as anything other than a hip and trendy way to go.

tina clarke
i have been knitting since i was six(more than 30 years!). now i have 7 children-they all learn to knit in school. great for co-ordination and encouraging creativity!

Rhian
No Knitting is definitely not just for grannies my mother taught me to knit when I was 6 or 7 and I still love it at 41.

sally
Im 31 (a long way of being a granny yet I hope). i agree it is very therapeutic and i often use it to de-stress and everything i make goes towards raising funds for my local hospital!

katie
No its defiently not. I enjoy knitting and im 17years old. Im a texile/art student and i enjoy making my own clothes from knitting. I read in vogue about a group who instead of graffiting traditional style, (using a spray can) they knit instead. I love knitting!

peggy
knitting is for all ages. there is so much you can knit.

mitzi
definatly not ,with all the new yarns and patterns that are out now it's setting a trend with the young.

Lena
I am 27 years old and i love knitting!

karina
Hi my name is karina I'm an 11 year old knitter and I had no idea that Cameron Diaz knew how to knit so "No" I don't think knitting is just for grannies. Bye-

Emily Cragg
Does anybody still knit the Kaffe Fasset/Zoe Hunt patterns?

Becky Knight
I really don't think that knitting is just for grannies! why should they have all the fun! I'm 12 and have been knitting for 4 years and ive taught loads of my friends how to knit to. we all LOVE KNITTING!!!!

Geraldine Trower
I have knitted since I was 4 years old. (Now the big 50). I knit for companies whoe design garments. I would love to know if there is a knitting cafa near me. Basingstoke, Hampshire Regards Geraldine

carol
no its not just for grannies, ive been knitting since i was 13, i taught my 4 daughters & 1 stepdaughter as well as a couple of their friends, & even tho im now a 'granny' i still find it enjoyable aswell as relaxing.

Avril Jones
I'm not a granny and I've been knitting (hand and machine) since my teens. It's therapeutic and it helps you lose weight! You might be surprised by granny machine knitters; they are some of the most technically minded people around. Some in their 80s have mini computer aided manufacturing set-ups, involving a PC directly linked to an electronic knitting machine, the latter reading instructions generated by the pattern design software on the computer. One lady even repaired a part on her aging knitting machine with Araldite - more usually found in the toolboxes of mechanics. By the way, both hand and machine knitting were invented by men - so come on guys, get your pins out and get clicking! Machine knitting is far quicker, of course, and there are always used machines for sale on Ebay. Machine knitting just needs some new, young designers to bring it back to life.

Ineta
I think that knitting is'nt just for grannies.Knitting is for all ages from girls and boys up to grannies. It is amazing!

Wendy Rogers
Certainly not! I have two granddaughters who can knit ages 6 and 10.Also believe it or not when I babysat my grandson one weekend I was knitting and he wanted to have a go,so I found him some wool and needles and he learnt in no time at all. He was 6 then and even now 3 years later he still says when he's here can he do some knitting. I think it's ok for any age or sex to have a go. I love knitting.

Marion Jones
Dear Jan, I used to live in Colchester , although this dates back a few years, there was an exellent craft shop called Franklin's on osbourne Street. they had a super selection of wool and patterns. Its a large shop. hope its still there! An alternative would be knitwell, which is a mail order company which I use a lot, they are on the internet .good luck Marion

Alice
I live in Waterloo. Would like to learn to knit. I am female and retired. Please send me info on where you meet and when and if I can join you.

Helena
Knitting is great and very relaxing, however I knit at the moment in a smaller scale than probably most of you (1/12) to be exact. The clothes are used to dress dolls house dolls. The needles I use range from UK 19-UK22 ( 0.6-1.00 mm), the yarn is slightly thicker than sewing thread.

Sue
Knitting is for everyone and is a good way to relax in todays rushed lifestyle. Take time out for yourself to create and unwind!! Agree with Annie there needs to be a knitting group for Peterborough. [edited comment]

debby
i teach all my neices and nephew they are aged between 8 and 16, they love it

Shelby Scarborough
Absolutely not! I'm 21 and I love knitting!

teresa
I love knitting and ctochet and I think it is something good for teenagers. If I just have some space I could encurage a few homless kids to learn, to make and sale and have a worm space to spend time. I sow a web site when young kids trawel for the money made on selling knitted goods. Teresa from Waterloo, Ontario.

Katie
I am 11 years old and i love knitting!

Marlene
I learned to knit from a young age (can't remember exactly what age though) and have always had something on the needles. I became an antie at 11 and knitted for my niece and nephew when they were small. My sister could knit but didn't particularly like it, so I used to knit for her children and did Aran sweaters for them. I also knitted for my own children before they were born and afterwards. Now that they are grown up I knit for my grandson. A couple of years ago I started designing and knitting my own bags and also children's hats and scarves. My daughter and I had a couple of sales of work last year (she sews) and I have had ongoing orders for my bags, etc. ever since. I find it most enjoyable and pick up my knitting in the evening once all the chores are finished, (I also work part-time), so still manage to fit it in!

maureen
think this is good ,i do love knitting ,and i knit for premature babies at my niece's hospital

Jan Hunt
Can anyone recommend a good source of supply for knitting wool? Here in Norwich there is a dire shortage and I would like to know of reliale suppliers, either via the internet or within the East Anglian region. I go to Cambridge fairly often so that would be acceptable. Thanks

karen taylor
i learnt to knit before i could read now i knit for charity there really are people out there who are cold tonight and would be grateful for a woolly from you

pip
me and my friends love knittng and knit nearly everyday. we exchange knitted gifts and also knit for profit... so at age 22 we are far from grannies, although it was our grannies that taught us. thank goodness for grannies, secertly leading the trends!

Elizabeth Hunt.
I knitt for Samaritans Purse shoeboxes that are sent at Christmas. I knitt hats and some mittens. They need lots of these items.Knitting is a wonderful craft and is for any age.

Vanessa White
My mother was a fantastic knitter well before being a 'granny’ and produced some lovely garments, even more so when my nephew, and then my own four children came along. She taught me the basics, and I found myself teaching my 22-year-old daughter the same basics on our family holiday last year (on a riverboat journey on the Douglas River in Tasmania!) Knitting is a creative and relaxing art form for people who can make time for an enjoyable hobby just like reading, theatre going, trying out new recipes etc. A dear friend produces the most amazing knitwear, much nicer than the usual mass-produced items in the high street. Inspired by her enthusiasm, I have found myself knitting again for my very fashion conscious 15-year-old twins. I am teaching them next! I think what was once a dying craft is showing a revival. It is a shame there are not many good wool suppliers around. There are some wonderful yarns, just a bit difficult to get hold of.

Jan Hunt
Knitting is a wonderful craft; I should know, started at three-and-a-half and now 81. That amounts to literally hundreds of garments. One of my sons is a skilled knitter of Aran sweaters. I knew a BOAC pilot years ago who always knitted once they were on auto-pilot; he said he was following in the footsteps of the Tuareg tribesman who used to knit while riding on the old trade routes.

Cliff
I stopped buying clothes 4 years ago and have knit everything I've worn since. It's difficult at first, but once you get into the swing, it's easy. You can knit everything from hats and scarves to socks and underwear. Who needs to shop for expensive designerwear when you can be just as unique by knitting your own garments. Knitting is the new shopping. Spread the word.

Terry Redmond
It used to be an off duty occupation for trawlermen, merchant sailors and similar occupations - so it's either unisex or there were some damn tough grannies around!

elaine knight
i have been knitting since i was 10 and although taught by my granny, i don't think it is just "for grannies". lots of my family and friends have me knitting baby cardigans, blankets etc.

Maureen Heddle
I've been knitting since the age of 4 (I'm now 36) and I find it a bit of a cheek to say that it's fashionable because of a few Hollywood stars. Give us knitters some credit for our creativity and the ability to do what can be a highly technical craft.

Margaretha
No I believe everybody can enjoy kniting from young to old.

Jen RT
Yes!

Annie
I'm in my early 40s and have knitted since I was 8 or 9 having given up waiting for Mum or Nan to knit some dolls clothes - I regulary knit baby items now for friends and colleagues and their partners. Every time I hand something over they seem surprised that I can knit. Keep it up. When is there going to be a place in Peterborough?
