Cash machine boxes: Your views
News image
News image A great idea to deter would-be PIN theives from accessing your bank details, or a waste of paint?

It's designed to stop invasion of your personal space at the cash machine- and stop people seeing your transaction.

Pedestrians were ignoring this box on Wednesday lunchtime.

The new "box junctions" have appeared around the machines on Queen's Road, Clifton.

They are the idea of Avon and Somerset Police, who say they will help stop crime at cash machines.

But the question is, will they work?

On Wednesday lunchtime the boxes near Nat West were being ignored by pedestrians passing cash machine users.

Many were walking through the box which extended almost the entire width of the pavement.

We want to know if you will be observing the new boxes.

Will they make you step back from the cash machine, or are they just another silly idea?

We'll have more on this story on this website on Thursday

Your views on the cashpoint "box junctions"

if your gonna get wacked for your card or money i dont think some pretty lines will stop a mugger, i live in bristol when i got mugged he had a shiny hammer, i was with my 3yr old, so its a good idea but keep trying

Phil
My understanding is that there's evidence from previous use of such 'boxes', that they have some positive effect. Despite it being purely psychological, I saw a report that stated a significant drop in cash-machine related muggings or thefts when these were in place. Mind you, I think that was in the States, so there's no guarantee it'll be as effective here. For my part, I act as if they weren't there - I'll queue exactly as I did before. But seeing as I never intend to nick someone's PIN or extort money from them, methinks I'm not really affected anyway...

Matthew Lamb
This works in Manchester where people are thoughtful and polite, but Bristol is too far down South and the idea of respect for other's privacy does not exist.

Allan, Moscow
Are you supposed to be committing some sort of crime if you step into these boxes? If so, could someone please enlighten me as to what it is?

Bilko
Can i enter if theres no oncoming traffic, or if my exit is clear then? Whered they get this one from then, Morons-R-Us? Waste of time, mind you i wouldnt park my car there......:)

Deltaf
Yellow paint! What a stupid idea! Why dont they have a BOOTH thats isolated from the outside by a door and allows only one at a time access? Oh, i forgot, itd cost too much to protect the banks customers.....idiots....

nick
Been used in Manchester and other big cities so it must work if it is being extended to other parts of the country.

Adam
Think the photo you have used sums it up. With that bin in the way, we'd probably have to walk in the road to observe the laws properly!

Vicky
I think they are a good idea. There is one in use (albeit a bit faded!) on Union St. and people observe the user's privacy. I don't think the box needs to span practically the whole width of the pavement though, but generally it's a good thing.

Kev
I'm a professional mugger and those yellow lines would scare me off for sure. Now I'll have to go onto benefits...

Ed
This reminds me of that old anarchist saying about why rules are problematic: The good people don't need them, and the bad people ignore them. However, I think these are OK - they might make people think.

roger
April Fool (honestly it isn't! - Ed)

Symn
I think they won't make a blind bit of difference as it seems there are a hell of a lot of disrespectful people in the UK anyway. That's why I left and moved to Australia.

Graham
Typical bright idea that hasn't really seen the full consequences. for instance, whose going to pay for the accident caused by someone side stepping to avoid the yellow lines and pushing some one off the pavement?. An open invitation to Yahoo's that will deliberately walk through the space to annoy others using the teller or waiting to.

Paul
Nice April Fool wind up I think!!

Ian Smart
What a great April Fool, how many people fell for it?

Fox man
When is the first fight going to break out after someone tells a person who steps 'inside the box' to get out their face? This could cause more trouble than it prevents...

Anna
I can see why they've introduced them but who's going to police this? I can't see anyone being arrested for stepping inside a box!

Darren
I understand what those silly sguares are for, but how is it going to stop a mugger, dose an invisible shild apear or maybe the police? I don't think so!

James hitcher
some people may not know what they are, but word will soon spread around and might make a difference to the amount of Street Crime in the UK James Hitcher ager 6

milton
I do think it is a very good idea I do not like any-one breathing down the back of my neck when I want to draw money out If other people moan Tough!

Evelyn Allen
I was in Queen's Road this afternoon and noticed the yellow box there. I guessed why it had been painted there but think most people will ignore them. It is my opinion that these will prove to be a waste of money.

Jim Eden
What an absoloute nonsense. What will be next painting yellow boxes around car parking spaces to bring down car crime!

Alexander Neumuller
What a waste of public money

Kate
Complete waste of paint. Courteous people already give you elbow room, the majority of rude, thoughtless people won't even notice the paint let alone think about what it's for. As for the dishonest, a bit of paint isn't going to make any difference.

Lizzy
I can't believe these boxes. What a complete waste of paint. Nobody knows what they are for, and everybody on the road is ignoring them. Even during a night out I don't think people will use them.

Tell us who you think of the new boxes
Great idea that will make people think about standing away from others using cashpoint machines, or a complete waste of paint?

What's your name?

What do you think of the yellow boxes?
