40,000 go along to carnival each year
Music, entertainment, stalls, sport and exhibitions - just some of the huge range of activities which will make up St Paul's Carnival 2004.

A staggering 40,000 people are expected to go along to this, the 37th celebration of culture in central Bristol.

As usual, the star attraction will be the stunning masquerade - or Carnival Camps - which will start and finish in Portland Square this year.

The floats and dancers will go up Dean Street, Brigstocke Road, Ashley Road and City Road before heading back down Dean Street to the square.

There will be road closures around St Pauls for the whole day.

Also in the square will be a stage area dedicated to the young people in the parade.

Headlining musically will be reggae artist Mikey Dread (Michael Campbell).

Mikey has worked with The Clash, UB40 and more recently Seal. You can catch his set on the main stage at 10pm.

Local band Small Axe take to the stage at 7.45pm.

The 10-strong reggae band formed in 2001 and are currently putting the finishing touches to their own studios in Bristol.

The carnival has a long history of bringing international acts to the city and 2004 is no exception.
