| | Machin, who directs Pinter's Betrayal from the end of January, is leaving the theatre after five years.
Gareth Machin was part of the team that brought Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe? Look Back in Anger and dockside spectacular Up the Feeder, Down the Mouth and Back Again to Bristol.
He is departing to "pursue other projects" at the end of February, but is hoping to leave on a high note with the Pinter classic, for which he once again joins forces with designer Mick Bearwish.
Beginning in 1977 and moving back through time, Betrayal tells the story of Jerry, Robert and Emma, three friends caught in an adulterous love triangle.
It begins two years after the affair has ended and finishes the day it started.
In between it takes the audience through the tangled web the three have woven, betraying each other again and again.
Nothing is sacred as friendship, marriage and professional relationships are put on the line.
Stars
The play stars Peak Practice's Simon Shepherd as Robert, Soldier Soldier's Lesley Vickerage as Emma and Old Vic regular and dashing Dr Tim Hathaway from the Archers, Jay Villiers as Jerry.
Machin's final work with the Old Vic is a fitting one for the city, which has a long association with Harold Pinter.
His first work was premiered by students at Bristol University and he directed Twelve Angry Men for the Bristol Old Vic in 1996.
Betrayal runs from 31st January to 1st March.
