BlackBud growing big in Bristol
News image
Image of band Black BudBlackBud's popularity is spreading. Already the band is confirmed for Glastonbury 2004, and is picking up plenty of radio air-play.

BlackBud's unusual mix of funk, blues and reggae has got the group, whose youngest member is 17-years-old, noticed.
Blackbud bursting on the scene, with a Glastonbury 2004 date confirmed.

Confirmed for Glasto 2004, Blackbud are picking up the pace with gigs in Bristol and lots of radio play.

Win copies of their new live album in our competition.

Adam Newton (bass) Sam Nadel (drums) and Joe Taylor (guitar, vox) make up the Bristol and Wiltshire-based band who are about to release a "Live at Fiddlers Bristol" CD.

Their youth (17/18) belies their tight performances and they recently won £1,000 at a battle of bands contest.

The boys are also getting used to the limelight, not only were they filmed at the recent Fiddlers gig but they are being closely followed by fly-on-the-wall documentary team.

BlackBuds' run up to next year's Glastonbury appearance looks any thing but black!

As well as working hard on the university circuit they found time to answer some cheeky questions we put to them on your behalf.

Who writes your music?
Adam: We all do, Joe (lead vocals, guitars) is the main writer at the moment though.

Where do you get your stage outfits?
Adam: We don’t have stage outfits!!
Sam: Image can be important but where we are as a band at the moment, we don’t feel we have to dress in anything other than what we feel comfortable in… Saying that! we have bought a nice PVC cat-suit outfit for Joe.
Joe: Ooh yeaeyeah oooohhh yeahieahh (steady...).

Who are your music heroes?
Adam: Jaco Pastorius, Blur, Marcus Miller, the RHCPs, loads of people.
Sam: Billy Cobham, Radiohead, Stevie Ray Vaughan etc.
Joe: Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Buckley, Tim Buckley, Nina Simone, Led Zeppelin, Ravi Shankar, Django Reinhardt, Wes Montgomery, Eric Clapton, Antonio Forcione, many more.

If you have a day job, what is it?
Adam: I used to wash up at a hotel but quit recently.
Sam: We basically spend all our time with the band but we also all give private lessons.
Joe: Guitar lessons, dosser and chicken catcher.

Best rockstar moment!
Joe: Can’t remember…
Sam: Signing peoples limbs was pretty cool, although it was only their arms.
Adam: Some girl wanted me to sign her chest.

Tell us a secret about each of you?
Joe: I was born completely naked (some secret mate!)
Sam: I spent 23 years in Cuba as a Cocaine Drug Lord trafficking substances across the world (that's more like it!)
Adam: I’m addicted to licking stamps (weirdo).

Which singer/band annoys you so much you’d like
to see him/her/them tarred and feathered?

Adam: Good Charlotte
Sam: I think that every music has a purpose and even the worst stuff isn’t exactly going to harm what we’re doing - good karma
Joe: Not real singers/bands but the corporate whores behind kiddy pop crap.

If you're not convinced the youthful BlackBud can really deliver funk, blues and reggae - afficionado Keith Warmington of BBC Radio Bristol recently said how impressed he was by their "new take on an old style of blues and funk".

A BlackBud in a sea of manufactured teen pop perhaps?

Gigs to come:

January 23, The Prom, Gloucester Road
March 4, The Louisiana, Wapping Road

To be in with a chance of winning a copy of their CD, all you have to tell us is which festival in Somerset the band will be playing at in 2004.
