It's simply in our nature to wannabe a rock/pop star but people like me who can't sing or play guitar, just have to write about talented people. Woo-hoo! Playing to thousands... having lots of uber-hot groupies... trashing up hotel rooms... stealing the shampoo samples and towels. It doesn't get much better than this, I hear you saying?! Bristol is full of unsigned bands looking for a record deal and the talent here is of a high level.
The market has become overcrowded.
With artists given a life span which matches that of cheap toilet paper. (i.e. rough and not long) talent is essential for success.
I decided to speak to a local unsigned four-piece band (who have talent!) - bring on Los Conios. Inspiration and influences Abortion, sexuality, and failed relationships - with lyrics about controversial subjects it makes you wonder how Adam Rich (vocals/guitar) gets his inspiration, especially because he is still the "tender" age of 18. ''When writing I don't sit in fields or any of the hippy clichés," Adam told me.
"Usually I get a surge of inspiration like when me and Piggy Pie (lead guitarist) rock-out like dirty boys!'' Adam proceeds to laugh but I can't help but think it sounds a bit strange! Their influences range from The Vines, Nirvana and The 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster, on hearing their songs it becomes evident. Raw guitar playing which sounds all fuzzy and fresh. A charismatic performance from Adam and an instantly catchy and contagious melody - all make them one to watch for the future. Role-play Piggy Pie, aka Gary Risdale, plays lead guitar.
The band's writing method consists of him doing the melodies and Adam writing the lyrics.
''Our music is kind of a mixture of grunge and nursery rhymes! Tasty riffs all the way,'' Adam cackles with laughter. One area you cannot criticise this band for is their humour.
They don't take themselves too seriously - which is always a good thing.
With Adam also known as Kweeni Dee and Gary being called Piggy Pie, it might seem the band are be trying to hard to get noticed. ''If people are just going to take one look and gasp in horror and slag us off then we don't really want them as fans. We like to be liberal with our music," says Adam. When the band are not rocking-out together, they have to juggle college and work.
Adam and Gary work together as school cleaners... God, this band are hardcore to the bone! Los Conios have only been together about a year, so how did it all start out? This little Piggy went...... ''Piggy Pie taught me to play guitar and I just sang in front of a few mates and apparently had a good voice.'' Their first gig was a nerve-wracking experience - they played in a Hell's Angels pub!
The audience didn't instantly warm to them. ''I was *****ing myself, because it was a Hell's Angels pub," Adam recalls.
"It was quite a challenge to try and please them as they were all into old-skool music, they probably disliked new music.''
"I was nervous and intimidated but I even got a few people dancing! The PA system kept cutting but I carried on singing anyway!'' I asked Adam about what the bands plans are regarding success. ''We like making music, and even if no-one listens to it, we'll still make it anyway!'' I'm not buying it, guys.... C'mon you must want to make some money out of it?!! If their are any other cool/rocking/kerazy bands out their then e-mail me about yourself.
