John is helping restore Old Sneed Park Nature Reserve

Work on the reserve is near completion

Video Nation: Old Sneed Park

John and Carole have been digging out brambles, planting new hedges and helping thin woodland areas to restore Old Sneed Park nature reserve. During the months of work there have been some exciting and unexpected discoveries.

The reserve lies between Old Sneed Park and the Severn Beach railway line with the entrance in Glenavon Park.

The site is important for wildlife and has wildflower meadows, bramble scrub, a lake and woodland.

John and Carole are members of the Friends of Old Sneed Park Nature Reserve. They have been working with the city council to improve the reserve, safety and access to the site since 1996.

After securing a grant from the Lottery a five-year plan was drawn up to restore the lake, repair its stone lining and the dam.

Getting the money was only the beginning; the real work has involved the Friends getting their boots on and spending days digging out mountainous brambles and laying hedges along the newly cleared main path.

They also arranged guided walks around the woodland's freshly lain trails and held an exhibition in Shirehampton detailing the work already carried out and what is to come.

Experts came to tidy up the trees and take down those which were dangerous or diseased.

The restoration work is nearing completion and John is busy filming part two of the story.
