We've long been fans of Nick Talbot and his band Gravenhurst. The band began in 1999, when Nick Talbot took the name from a song written by underground guitar-hero Dave Pajo. The first two Gravenhurst albums, Internal Travels and Flashlight Seasons were released through Nick's own Silent Age label. In 2000, Nick partnered Guy Bartell in establishing and maintaining the Victorian Dancehall Horror-tronica outfit, Bronnt Industries Kapital. Gravenhurst signed to Warp in 2004, re-released Flashlight Seasons, and quickly followed it up with Black Holes in the Sand, a mini-album of intense, sonic, folk-influenced murder ballads. ![]() Listen: Pedalboard masterclass (below) Moving sideways into rock territory, Nick and drummer Dave Collingwood recorded Fires in Distant Buildings at home and at Toybox Studios in Bristol. Gravenhurst have toured extensively in Europe and the USA, playing numerous festivals and supporting Broadcast and Belle & Sebastian. In 2006, Gravenhurst provided original music for the film Ein Freund Von Mir. A new album, The Western Lands, has just been released and Nick visited Bristol Uncovered to talk about the album and play three songs as part of a solo Gravenhurst session. Help playing audio/video As an added bonus for all guitarists, he also explained which pedals and effects he uses. Help playing audio/video BBC Radio Bristol Introducing with Richard Pitt and Gary Smith is on-air on BBC Radio Bristol each Saturday and Sunday from 1am until 3am.
