Fine Tuned: October 07

Fine Tuned, an area dedicated to our local music scene including artist profiles, news and gossip and a handful of gig recommendations.

3rd November

MEETING THE MUSOS

Bronnt Industries Kapital was orginally formed by Guy Bartell and Nick Talbot of Gravenhurst as an outlet for their shared interest in layering electronic sounds. The live line-up has included Tom Bugs and Max Milton and currently features Anton Maiof from Geisha and Duncan "War Against Sleep" Fleming. Music with shades of Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk is Bronnt's stock-in-trade, although latterly funkier, more beat-driven elements have been introduced. Their first album, Virtute et Industria is still available on Static Caravan and they're currently performing their live soundtrack of the creepy old Swedish witchcraft movie, Haxan around the UK and Europe. They'll be in Bristol at the old Pro Cathedral in Clifton with the show next Saturday, November 10. A second album is also planned for release next year.

MEETING THE MUSOS

Nick Talbot, the creative force behind Gravenhurst joins us this week. His musical education began early when he picked up drumsticks aged nine then the guitar at twelve. He was in a band called Assembly with friends from his native Surrey when he moved to Bristol 11 years ago. But the group fell apart in 1999 when the bassist was killed in a car accident. After that, Nick began creating his own songs and soon Gravenhurst was born. The band enjoys critical success in the UK and has picked up a large following on the continent, especially in Germany. The latest album, The Western Lands has been recently released, with singles Trust and Hollow Men out on Warp Records. Gravenhurst play The Fiddlers in Bristol on Friday, October 12 then tour the UK for the rest of the month before heading abroad in November.

MEETING THE MUSOS

The 8-piece punk/hip hop/ska outfit Babyhead first formed in the Glastonbury area of Somerset around ten years ago, but have been knocking around in Bristol for the last five. A very popular and energetic band, they've built up a big following in the local area, especially after a succession of triumphant appearances at the Ashton Court Festival. But 2007 has been a difficult year with sickness in the band, the loss of a big chunk of their merchandise when the chain, FOPP, went down and worst of all, a break-in at their studio with most of their instruments and stage gear being stolen. But they're determined not to be beaten and are putting on a big gig next Friday October 12 at Clockwork on Stokes Croft to raise money for replacement equipment. They're also busy promoting their album, Babyboom Town until next January when they due to take a break while their drummer becomes a daddy.
