Wallace and Gromit
'Cracking read Gromit'

Wallace and Gromit on a Reading Adventure

We know Wallace is a fan of cheese and tends to have quite outrageous adventures, but did you know he and his sidekick Gromit are also crackers about reading, in particular "Around The World In 80 Days"?

The intrepid duo have taken time out from tracking down the Were-rabbit to promote the Brunel 200 Great Reading Adventure in which everyone across the city will be encouraged to read Jules Verne's story at the same time.

Don't worry if you haven't got a copy at home: we will be publishing the story here on the website in installments from 5 January 2006 for 80 days.

The choice of book is especially apt for 2006 - the 200 anniversary celebrations of the birth of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Verne wrote about the opening up of the world through transport and technology and sailed on Brunel's last great ship, The Great Eastern.

Special website

A full-text edition of the novel published in the Oxford World's Classics' series will feature the charismatic characters on the cover, and they will also appear all over the region on posters and other promotional material.

Project director, Andrew Kelly, welcomed Wallace and Gromit's contribution to the project: "It's great to have Wallace and Gromit back supporting the Great Reading Adventure, especially at such a busy time."

The Great Reading Adventure aims to bring the people of the South West together through the joy of reading.

In addition to the tens of thousands of copies of the book being distributed, readers will be able to get hold of a fully illustrated guide, which provides the history of the book and author.

All ages can take part as there will be a specially written and illustrated children's version available.

Look out for a special website to be launched in December: www.swreads.com

Get ready to read - you'd be crackers to miss out!
