People walking on the Clifton Suspension Bridge

Ashton Court: Walking guide

As you may or may not be aware, the Suspension Bridge is closed this weekend.

If you're going to brave the walk, here are a few option for getting there from north of the city.

From Clifton, we think the best option is to walk down Hopechapel Hill.

Otherwise you can also walk down Bridge Valley Road - both will get you eventually to the Portway and Cumberland Basin.

From the city centre, you can walk down Anchor Road into Hotwell Road.

There are several options for crossing the river by foot here.

You can cross at Merchant's Road if you have walked from the city centre, and then head up Brunel Lock Road and cross the river Avon on Brunel Way.

Otherwise if you've come from Clifton you need to use the pedestrian section of the Plimsoll Swing Bridge.

When you have crossed the Avon take the steps down and walk across to the Pill cycle track, turn left and follow this until you get to the bottom of Rownham Hill.

From here walk up the hill which then takes you to the traffic lights by the Clifton Lodge entrance to Ashton Court.

Then you need to walk the golf course (mind the bunkers) before you get to the main festival gates.

If you've got a better route, then use the form below to tell us about it!

They close the bridge for the festival as well. A pleasant walk along the downs and across the bridge, has been turned into a very long and unattractive journey along the traffic choked roads of the basin. The closure also causes major traffic congestion and pollution. As people have already stated, there is no adequate engineering reason put forward for this closure. Who are these unaccountable trustees who can block public access?

I am intending to travel to the balloon fiesta in August, where do you think will be the best place to stay? I thought maybe we could stay somewhere outside and be able to walk in, but I do not know where. camping is a possibility
