Come East, Ann Coulter!

Dan DamonDan Damon|09:20 UK time, Wednesday, 27 September 2006

I think Ann Coulter should emigrate to the UK.

(There can't be many in the US who haven't heard of her, but in case you haven't or you're not there, she gets one of the biggest Wikipedia entries on the entire site. )

But why should she come to Britain when she consistently hits top ratings and the best seller lists in the US?

Because she'd have more fun.

In the US, she faces constant bickering interviewers who want to score points. And angry Q&A's with college students who apparently want to lynch her.

In Britain, she will face what, by comparison, is gentle probing.

One of the pushiest interviewers in Britain is Jeremy Paxman on BBC2's Newsnight.

Yet even he decided to be polite, even acquiescent.

Some bloggers thought she'd taken him to the cleaners.

I don't see it that way. He reacted the way I did when I interviewed her.

You just want to let her say all these quaint and outrageous things. It's entertaining, unserious rhetorical pyrotechnics - or so we think from this side of the Atlantic.

As you can tell from the Paxman interview, and this behind the scenes view from the programme editor, there's an irrestible feeling that she can't mean it.

So come over, Ann, and take life easy.

You'd add a lot of spice to coverage of British politics, and let's face it, you'd make a lot of Americans very happy.

Think of the crowds who would wave you off.
