Drowned out?

Peter van Dyk|10:50 UK time, Tuesday, 8 August 2006

Led by you, the programme (like the news) has been dominated by Lebanon for the past three weeks. But 17 aid workers have been killed in Sri Lanka and as the UK newspaper The Independent wrote in its leader today:

At any other time, the execution-style killing of 15 aid workers in Sri Lanka would surely have been front-page news.

And of course as well as Sri Lanka there's continuing violence in Iraq and Israeli incursions into the Gaza Strip.

So do you still want to talk about Lebanon?

We have heard from Iraqis about the insecurity in Baghdad, and also Palestinians about the situation in Gaza recently - do you want to know more?

And for extra credit reading, here are a couple of articles I read this morning, on issues we've talked about before on World Have Your Say:

When Students Speak
Last week a sharply divided US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit let stand an earlier decision holding that a public school may prevent a student from wearing an anti-gay T-shirt on campus. The court's answer presents serious problems, but identifying a better solution is tricky.

Nothing Wrong With Kansas
Last week, Republican primary voters in Kansas ousted the conservative majority on the state Board of Education, which had adopted science standards embracing intelligent design and casting doubt on Darwinian evolution. The vote, which should lead to changes to those embarrassing standards, is an encouraging sign that even in conservative jurisdictions, most people want kids to be taught biology, not religion.
