Tanya Auclair & TR

Another jampacked show from 1-3am this morning with our Import/Export feature, tips from Huw and Bobby plus - most exciting of all - a session recorded exclusively for the show from Tanya Auclair. She blew us away with her astonishing talent and huge personal warmth. She not only coined the term "wonky-tonk percussion" but gave us a glimpse into her inspirations and onward journey. The interview and both session tracks can be heard in full on this morning’s show - listen again here.

We also had a good laugh with our new friends at Triple J Radio in Sydney - breakfast presenters Tom Ballard and Alex Dyson. Have you ever hypotenused?.... If not, click on the link as it's a trend that may well catch on fast over here. Our export to Tom and Alex was Little Girl by our good friends Masters in France who - as Tom R explained - are from Old North Wales. From New South Wales they sent us back back Feeding Line - the ambitiously commercial new single by Boy & Bear.

Huw Stephens
gave us a live track from the BBC Introducing Stage at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Carlisle the other week - Cavalcade by the curiously-spelled Eastbourne band YAAKS. As mentioned last week you can see video of all the Introducing artists at the R1BW on the main BBC Introducing Website.

From The Asian Network our pal Bobby Friction brought us the Love & Light remix of Load by David Starfire from his new EP. Very lovely. And last but in no way least, the fine Scots songwriter Samantha Whates - featured last week in in Thanks For Your Support - paid the love forward by bringing Jack Cheshire to our attention. Jack calls London home and recorded his album in Sweden - yet he named it Copenhagen. Go figure.

Phew…. jam-packed is what it is. See the listings below for all the other great music you tipped to us this week. We're always keen to hear about any top tunes that can be heard in full online - your own or anyone else's. But remember - don't send us CDs or mp3s: please click on the Recommend Music link above to tell us all about them and we promise to listen. And if we like what we hear, we play it: simple as that.

Nick Pini, Tom Robinson, Lou Vainglorious

Tonight's show starts where we left off last week - with Charlie Baxter's wonderful and faintly ludicrous electro homage to... himself. Which once again had us grooving around the studio in party mood from the get-go.

So many great music recommendations come through from the BBC's network of regional new music shows that each week we play Introducing Roulette to pick one at random. The virtual ball landed on a show once known as The Friday Night Gerbil - but now prosaically rebranded as BBC Shropshire Introducing (boo hiss). Rob Fanner sent us a song called I Feel So Slightly Strange - by the Telford power trio Lady Fortune. Also endorsed by Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq, they played the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading & Leeds last year: see video of that performance here.

Our guests were Hoodlums, a band we first heard in the very earliest days of this show (25 November 2007 to be precise) and whose progress we've been following ever since. Frontman Lou Vainglorious and bassist Nick Pini fessed up that back then the band didn't actually exist at the time - they's just played all the parts themselves on that early demo The Beat Bop. 2010 turned out to be a landmark year forHoodlums with a sudden surge both in fan numbers and musical selfconfidence for Lou and Nick. Their new single Landmarks is one of the results and released on Independence Day - July 4th.

DJ Target's 100% Homegrown Download this week was an acoustic production from the upcoming London songwriter Obenewa - who's been playing piano and guitar singe age four. Her superb vocals, canny lyrics and mastery of jazz guitar voicings made this a welcome breath of fesh air. We played a new song called The Beast by next week's guests, the Alsager duo The Flares, featuring Mariachi-style brass. We also heard from a new and punchy Colchester trio with the confusingly similar name Flares (without a "the"). But which is better? There's only one way to find out.

Finally tonight we featured two exclusive recordings from Bristol producer Zoon Van Snook's first live tour dates in Europe earlier this year. One of them is his forthcoming single Ee’m Yorn which - Mr Snook assures us - is Bristolese for "that belongs to you". Sessions aside, you can always hear any of the tracks featured in the show on the artist' own web pages by clicking through links in these tracklistings on our blog. Hope you enjoy them as much as we did...

Sound Advice From Adam Walton

Tom RobinsonTom Robinson|18:32 UK time, Wednesday, 25 May 2011

Adam Walton's BBC Blog

Adam Walton at BBC Wales has written four great new BBC blog posts:

"Now that my Sunday night show for new Welsh music has been fully assimilated..." Adam writes "...into the future technology of the BBC Introducing Uploader, I thought it would be a good idea to offer some tips and advice to artists intending to send me their music...."

Although some of the advice is specific to his particular show, it offers vital insights into how some records end up - or don't end up - getting played on the radio. As Adam says, many of his suggestions ought to be obvious to any artist who wants their work to get heard in the wider world. But all too often, common sense gets overlooked by ambitious musicians in a hurry.

These four posts ought to be compulsory reading for every aspiring artist in the country. Or at least, any of them intending to send their music to a radio station in the future.

Bob Allan from Generator

Tonight’s show had a distinctly Northastern flavour, with Generator’s Bob Allan telling us all about Newcastle's upcoming Evolution Emerging Festival at venues across the Ouseburn Alley. Did we have fun? Whey-aye, pet!

Bob caught a Southbound train to come in and tell us all about this FREE event, co-sponsored by NARC magazine and taking place this coming Friday, May 27th. As a musician himself (from the sadly defunct Ever Since The Lake Caught Fire), it’s inspiring to see how passionate Bob is about helping local, unsigned artists. Catch his interview in full on the show.

Our exclusive live tracks also had a Tyneside bias with local legends Let’s Buy Happiness and Polarsets recorded live on the Introducing Stage at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Carlisle. And you can see video footage of all the emerging artists performing there on the main BBC Introducing Website.

Huw Stephens tipped us the harrowingly beautiful song Landfill by the artist known as DAUGHTER - first recommended to this show by Girl Music Guru Ruth Barnes. In the wake of which she’s been booked by Lauren Laverne for a session AND added to the main 6 Music playlist. We couldn’t be more proud.

Finally, we also got ourselves a bonus tip from the ever knowledgeable Steve Lamacq who warmly recommends new Guildford outfit Sissy And The Blisters. All in all today’s show is, to coin a caricature, reet champion - and well worth two hours of your time!

PS from TR: huge thanks to ace intern Emma Segal for writing our show descriptions these past few weeks and who we wish all the very best in her future career.

Sunfields

Tonight’s show had a truly universal feel, with artists and recommendations coming from around the world. Literally. Our guests were Jason & Chris from Canadian rockers Sunfields who managed to be charming despite suffering from jetlag, sleep deprivation and the rigours of touring. Hear the interview in full, including the band’s views on the Montreal music scene and French/English musical collaborations, on the show.

Also on the international theme, we received a rather special tip from Primavera Festival’s official station SCANNER FM for local outift ZA! (whose proud boast is that they play seven instruments onstage despite there being only two of them.) We also heard from the Austrian outfit Francis International Airport, who hail from Vienna.

However, one of the most interesting tunes came from the (arguably) less exotic region of Hackney, East London and it was tipped to us by DJ Target as his 100% Homegrown Download at 1Xtra this week. Target's tips are always a refreshing break from the 6 Music frame of musical reference. And FUZZYLOGICBABY’s ‘Drunken Man’s Speech’ had us grooving especially exuberantly to its infectious chorus and vibey groove. ‘Ay-ay-ay’ indeed!

Finally, we’ve got to take our hats off to the West Midlands artist Charlie Baxter who managed to turn himself into an instant legend with us just by judiciously namechecking himself in the insanely catchy ‘Charlie Baxter’s In My House’. An ingenious mix of hip-hop, dub, pop and rock exploded from the speakers and had us throwing the kind of shapes that would easily break the 6 Music webcams. It's lucky the programme was prerecorded. You can check out these tracks and more aural delights besides on the show.

Wrongnote

The fine Glaswegian outfit Wrongnote (pictured) headed down the M6 to join us mobhanded in the studio for a chat about their summer tour plans and being the stars of a computer game…to find out more, listen to the interview in full on today’s show.

The legendary Steve Lamacq also popped in on today’s show to tell us about his BBC Introducing session at Maida Vale with the artist known as Foe from which we got the exclusive track ‘Tyrant Song’. We also showcased a new track by longstanding friends of the show, Slides from their forthcoming EP which is due out at the end of the month.

We also had our usual tips from the effervescent Bobby Friction and the lovely Huw Stephens. Sadly, tonight's were our last ever recommendations from our Girl Music Guru these past two years, Ruth Barnes. We wish her the best of luck for her new job, and know she’ll be amazing! Want to know what we’re talking about? Follow her at @otherwomanradio on twitter to find out.

On today’s show you can expect to hear everything from instrumental electro to country, classic Panjabi folk to Canadian alt-rock (we did rather love that Yes Cadets track in the studio). This just reaffirms our mission statement; if it’s good, fresh and on the net, we’ll play it! Tom with Beccy and Dam from Sharks Took The Rest

Today’s show had us feeling every emotion, as we welcomed back the utterly charming Sharks Took the Rest to the Introducing studios, and proceeded to ’get angry’… The interview with Sharks is a must listen. In addition to an exclusive announcement about a very special, not so secret outdoor summer gig *cough cough*, Beccy and Adam revealed details about their much anticipated new EP, community songwriting projects and the fundamentals of songwriting.

Lectrolips’ ‘What We Came Here For’ had us all cutting shapes to the electronic, ‘computerpop’ beats. Whilst we thought we looked like the ‘cat’s pyjamas’, I suspect the people in the studio next door were simply being too polite to tell us otherwise. We soon calmed down and were left in a thoughtful mood following the playing of Shambles Miller’s ‘Things That Make Me Angry’. Listening along to the lyrics, the team assessed which of the things that make Shambles angry would make us angry too. The last thirty seconds of the track certainly makes you think…

Once again we found ourselves humming incessantly to the gloriously addictive ‘Sold My Soul’ by Cattle and Cane. We’ve not stopped singing it in the office since we first heard it! You can hear that infectious song, and your usual selection of fresh new tracks, on today’s show.

Sam from Club Smith makes like Mike Tyson. Tom Robinson makes like Wallace - DO SOMETHING GROMMIT!!!

Health tips on a new music show? You’d better believe it… We welcomed the return of newly transformed Sam Robson from Club Smith, who popped in for a chat fresh off a train from Leeds. Sam spent three months training for the video for new single ‘No Friend of Mine’. If you want to hear how he transformed into a lean mean fighting machine, tune in to the show. You can also view the video by clicking the YouTube link above.

VASQUEZ also made a welcome (musical) return to the show, with their storming instrumental ‘McLovin’. In spite of the fact that they remain as mysterious as ever (please put more hard information about your band online, guys!) we certainly enjoyed rocking out to ‘McLovin’ in the studio.

We also got our rap on with KARL PHILLIPS AND THE MIDNIGHT RAMBLERS. This brilliant track had us all crunking in the studio. It also left us in awe of ‘Karl’s’ ability to rap and the Midnight Ramblers' ability to keep up with him. Freakily quickly. Without stumbling over the words or beats. If we tried anything like that, we’d be breathless in seconds…

Finally, we welcomed back Ruth Barnes (our resident Girl Music Guru from The Other Woman Music for her penultimate tips. We’ll be sad to see her go, but alas, she must move on to pastures new. On that subject, she had some big news to share in addition to her usual big tunes. Listen to next week’s show for more…

Bordeauxxx

Today’s show involved a lot of ‘progging out’ in the studio, in addition to practicing a Spanish accent… We had Bordeauxxx in the studio for a quick chat. Whilst the band are a five piece, we only had three microphones. Ever the professionals, the band found an ingenious way to decide who would talk during the interview. A quick game of ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ never fails! (See below...)

We chatted to the band about graduating, as they’re (mostly) in their final weeks of University. This was something current intern Emma could certainly empathise with, having just finished her degree. You can, of course, hear the interview in full on today’s show. Ennis Tola’s track offered the Introducing team the chance to ‘prog out’ in the studio. We suspect we had as much fun playing the record as the band had recording it! Like Lauren Laverne said on her show last Wed (4th May), it really seems that Australia is ‘on it’ at the moment – both unsigned and signed bands from the country are really delivering.

Finally, El Gran Chufle’s track had us all practising our Spanish accents and pronunciation in the studio. You can hear how accurately Tom pronounced EP name ‘Tambores Obstinados Y Rudio Voltaico’ by listening again to the show on the BBC iPlayer.

Tom's studio guests were the London combo Raven Beats Crow who wrote on their blog: "We went to the BBC and did an interview today with Tom Robinson for his 6music show...It was great! What a nice (and incredibly tall man Tom Robinson is. Anyway, you can hear the rubbish we came out with and a first ever british radio play of Escalator (from the Zola Budd EP) this sunday night ". Aw shucks - we loved meeting you too.

Our session tracks came from the Edinburgh band Found - recorded live on the Marc Riley Show on 6 Music last week. And our tip from Tom's Now Playing @ 6 Musicshow a week last Friday was by music blogger Ollie Russian from My Band's Better Than Yours. who picked the excellent new Boscombe band Bos Angeles for us... Enjoy!
