The next train to depart from Brigg leaves...on Saturday

"This is the age of the train" - Sir Jimmy Savile famously told us in those old TV adverts.
However, people in one part of Northern Lincolnshire may question what age they are living in when it comes to their local rail service.
The market town of Brigg is served by just three passenger trains in each direction every week - all on a Saturday between Cleethorpes and Sheffield - on a line which is used predominantly by freight trains.
Aside from the lack of a regular train service, many Brigg folk seem to be put off by the rundown state and inaccessibility of the town's station.
It's an issue that's been addressed by Nigel Fisher's Brigg Blog. Nigel was a huge help when I was researching this subject for a recent BBC Look North strand called 'Your Story Your Place.'
Any improvements to rail services in Brigg seem unlikely in the foreseeable future. Here is the statement issued by Northern Rail...
"The number of trains that call at Brigg station are specified by the Department for Transport (DfT).
"Unfortunately there are no immediate plans to increase the service levels due to the low number of people who use them.
"In terms of station improvements, we continue to seek new partnership opportunities and are always happy to discuss third party funded improvements with relevant organisations."
