Save Election Night campaign forcing rethink

Richard Moss|12:40 UK time, Wednesday, 7 October 2009

Vote countingThere's no doubt the Conservative Conference has an extra frisson this year because of the impending General Election.

But back here in the region, there's some more news on just when those crucial election votes will be counted.

As I've reported before, many of our councils are looking to shift election night counts from the traditional Thursday night to Friday morning.

That's not gone down well amongst hardcore politicos who've begun their own Save General Election Night campaign, although I'm not sure there's too much sign of public disquiet and riots on the streets just yet.

North Tyneside was considering counting their votes on Friday, but they may be rethinking.

The area includes one safe Labour seat - Stephen Byers' Tyneside North - but a crucial one for the Conservatives - Tynemouth.

They are now looking at the possibility of a Thursday count, though no final decision has been made.

And an attempt is being made to make Newcastle City Council think again.

They want to count the city's three seats on Friday, but a group of councillors are presenting a motion to return the count back to Thursday.

They've even set up a Facebook page to garner support.

I'll let you know what happens.

Incidentally, more confusion on the Tory policy on Regional Development Agencies.

My colleague Mark Denten has now been told that they will all be abolished by the Conservatives - including One North East.

There may be the possibility of then setting up a successor organisation if there's local demand, but there's no clue about what form it will take.
