What makes a good chat show host?
Journalist and talent show judge Piers Morgan has been confirmed as Larry King's replacement on CNN. What advice would you give him?
The show, which has not yet been named by the US network, will air from January in more than 200 countries.
Referring to King in a statement, the Britain's Got Talent judge said he had "dreamed of one day filling the legendary suspenders of the man I consider to be the greatest TV interviewer of them all".
Who is your greatest chat show host? What qualities separate an average talk show host from a great one? Is the head-to-head interview a tired format? What talk show genre works best?
Thank you for your comments. This debate is now closed.

Paul O'Grady really does make an effort to get to know his guests, is knowledgeable about them and can relate to them marvellously. Sadly, the rest of his show is poor.
Andrew Marr is absolutely top-notch, but only really appeals to those who love political debate (as there is too little on the entertainment side in his AM programme). We never miss a show.
The worst chat show host of all time has to be Jonathan Woss, who hardly lets his guests get a word in edgeways. Dreadful.
Parkie was very good (to an extent) however his voice was monotonous and he came over as a little pompous in later years.
Only advice to Piers Morgan - don't do it! Voice is too nasal.

I doubt whether his cardboard personality will endear him to the more inteligent USA public for long.
Even on talent shows, with all his now history/experience of such shows he STILL looks and SOUNDS like he is out of place.
His more serious interviews (LOL) on ITV could have been made by someone made from recycled toilet roll cardboard inserts, just so stiff and uniform.
Still, I wish him well over there, they are welcome to him, thus, we are saved!!!

First, make up your mind if your chat show is about you or about your guests.
If you want it to be primarily a vehicle for your own talent, make sure that your jokes are genuinely funny. Laugh with your guests, not at them.
If you want it to be about your guests, pick interesting people who have actually got something to say - then facilitate them saying it without intruding other than to prompt further comment. SHow genuine interest in them and their contributions.

You missed the main requirement for a current chat show host, to always talk in a very high camp manner, giggle a lot at their own purile jokes/witticisms/double entendres.
Like most men I find this extreemly unfunny and cannot listen, my wife like most women love it.
Ross was a case in point, women watched him, men didn't. He was kept on at the BBC because he and his followers said he was worth it, long after most people had stopped (some of us never started) laughing at his jokes (sic).
Piers Morgan is another self promoting windbag, watch his performance on 'have I got news for you' and realise what a nasty person he becomes when he is not fawned over.
The americans actually believe the hype that their chat show hosts put out. That and an endless procession of self promoting interviewees who are 'soooooo' desperate to be seen will ensure that he will be watched. I hope so, anything would be better than him returning to our screens for a long time.

The best advice one could give him is to be natural, be a good listerner and always focus on the positive strengths of the guests. Putting guests on the defensive all the time would be stirring a witch's brew. Laughter and humour have been Larry King4s strengths. His successor would be wise to take several leaves from Larry's on-line successes as talk-show host!

Saying that, talk shows aren't a particularly good format as the guests only come on to plug whatever they're trying to sell and most of the questions are banal and uninteresting which results in answers of the same standard. The best interviews tend to be when the guest is someone the host knows well and feels comfortable asking awkward or off-beat questions that then produce genuinely funny anecdotes or reveal something interesting about themselves that you hadn’t previously known.

I had the honour to be in the audience when Michael Parkinson interviewed Sean Connery. It might have been chummy but the atmosphere was absolutely electric and I've never enjoyed an interview so much before or since.

I've yet to see a good chat show, nevermind a host.
The modern chatshow formula is
1 opening credits.
2 read joke from autocue
3 introduce guest
4 guest advertises latest project.
Repeat steps 2-3 until end credits.
I'd rather set fire to my own knee caps than voluntarily sit through this pointless 'advertainment'."
My thoughts exactly!

Yes, that's why Jonathan 'highest paid BBC presenter for about 10 years' Ross is doomed to the disappointing failure of his multi-millionaire status and a 25 year TV career, including a long-running saturday night show, hosting about every awards show going, his own radio show and a book or two.

1. Those that ask interesting people questions that elicit interesting or informative answers that actually teach you something about the person or the subject being discussed.
2. Those that let story tellers or comedians entertain.
Parkinson was excellent at both of the above. It was his show, but he wasn’t the focus – he allowed the stars to shine. Bob Monkhouse never attempted the first option, but he was excellent at allowing his guests to entertain the audience. He may have interspersed the show with his own jokes, but for much of the time he simply played straight man to whoever was sitting opposite and allowed them to perform.
The worst chat shows are those where the host is the star, and where the interviews are little more than glorified adverts for whatever film or book the interviewee is trying to plug. The guests simply go through the motions for a few minutes without any kind of personal input, whilst the host simply feeds them opportunities to plug even more. Jonathan Ross is a prime example, and Letterman has made a fortune without asking a guest a difficult or challenging question for years. They both started off with the talent and intelligence to be good interviewers, but both took the easy option of becoming little more than purveyors of celebrity gossip whilst revelling in their own fame.
Having said that, I think the days of in-depth one-on-one interviews are long gone. TV now panders to an audience obsessed with celebrity gossip, whilst the stars go to extraordinary lengths to play the media in order to sell the image image they want to sell whilst protecting their true private lives. They want to go on the shows when it suits them in order to sell product, but they don’t want to actually sit and talk in depth with someone in front of a camera. Many ‘celebs’ actually make a living by carefully releasing ‘exclusives’ about their lives to the media, so they certainly don’t want to give it away on a chat show unless it suits their sales plan!

Questions range from the inept to the boring and down right embarrassing. Guests are usually people of little merit and are usually celebrities who will disappear without trace within a few years. Very rarely do people of real worth allow themselves to be interviewed in this format. When, for instance, did Frank Zappa ever submit himself to a chat show?
To answer the question, the best chat show hosts recognise the genre for the waste of time it is and do and say things that are deliberately designed to be satirical, outrage, shock and appeal to the sick end of our sense of humour. So my top hosts would be Graham Norton, Chatty Man, Mrs. Morton, (Bless her.)and of course Jonathan Woss. Between them they have appealed to my lowest common denominator and have stirred up so much bile amongst the PC brigade that they have kept me entertained for years.

Who can forget his infamous appearance on "Have I Got News for You" when he threatened Ian Hislop by unleashing his photographers with their telephoto lenses on his house? What about the made-up photographs he printed in the Daily Mirror supposedly showing Iraqi's being tortured by our soldiers? I don't think that would go down well in America where people are fanatically loyal to their armed forces.

What makes a good talk show host?
- good at making conversation, so good they get paid for doing it and high ratings keep it that way
- makes the guest seem very interesting, no matter how dull and uninteresting s/he may actually be
- pays attention, asks penetrating questions, listens to the answers, and actually generates more talk from the answers
- never takes him/herself too seriously and can admit a mistake.
I never enjoyed Larry King; sometimes his shows were just not "important". Sometimes, I thought he was losing interest; sometimes he seemed bored.
Therefore, I look forward to Piers Morgan who seems personable, intelligent, quick-witted, humble and experienced.
Remember - Piers Morgan's Life Stories. Each program was devoted to one special celebrity guest. The interviews were intimate, in-depth, emotional and lasted an hour.
Now that Piers Morgan is filling "the legendary suspenders of the man I consider to be the greatest TV interviewer of them all", I hope that he can forget whose suspenders he is filling and just be Piers Morgan.
As for the head-to-head interview perhaps being a tired format.
Nope, that's just the host getting tired.

There is a lot of criticism of Pierce Morgan on here but being honest, he is far better at interviewing people than Larry King is. Larry seems to soft-balls all his guests; sometimes you wonder if he is being paid to ask the questions by their PR companies!
