We pleadge that 1. the day will begin at dawn, 2. rain will be wet, as will 3. the sea, 4. those bits of the plannet that are not wet will be dry and 5. the moon's made of green cheese. All as measurable as Gordon's effort.

Based on Labour’s past performance – can I suggest that the following would probably be more appropriate for Labours election pledges:

To wreck the economy
To Lower living standards
To Let foreigners take control of our industry
To Let millions more immigrants into the country
To totally destroy the country as we know it

You must be kidding this mans track record on promises speaks for itself.
Remember the referendum that never was? and all the porkys he has been caught out on recently. Not to mention the 10p tax disaster and the promise to make ammends that never happened. Just a few more weeks of lies and spin and hopefully a hung paliament. Cant wait to see all the red face polititians.

If Gordon Brown wanted to secure the economy, why did he split the responsibility for financial regulation, letting the banking system get to the verge of collapse?

If I believed anything Nu Labour promised at any time, I would have to be one of the most gullible person on earth! When I look at the hash that Nu Labour has made of just about everything - especially the economy - It almost drives me to despair! I want a fair, just, truthful, and happy Country for my Children and Grand Children. I know that I will never get it under Nu Labour or, especially, Mr Brown.

Neither Mr Brown, or any of Nu Labour, or Nu Labour inspire me to do anything other than leave the UK if they get another five years!

In 1997 New Labour promised a fair deal for all and the chance to make the most of one’s potential.

As a single childless male I have never had a fair deal with New Labour and all those who have already had plenty of spoon-feeding continue to qualify for more help yet workers who are living way below these standards who don’t rely on state handouts or special privileges are ignored and treated as second class.

On the face of it, it all sounds good, but what does it all actually mean? That word 'control' belongs to the weasel family if ever one did. It needs a good deal more detail before any sense appears out of the pledges.

I don#t understand how they just had a budget when just about everyone knows they will be kicked out in 6 weeks time.

Cameron should make clear that everything could be changed when he finally gets a look at the books and finds out just how dire the situation really is.

Absolutely nothing whatsoever! What a joke. This man, and his appalling party, have had almost 13 yeares to implement what they are promising now, and what they promised back then. And, as is usual with dishonest, corrupt labour, they have implemented none of them. Anyone who votes in the forthcoming election for either this man, or his party, needs urgent treatment!

Gordan has already pledged to be leader of the labour party and PM for the next parliment!

But then at the last election their MANIFESTO not their pledge card promised a vote on a certain EU treaty?

Let's be very clear - the Labour Governments list of pledges and promises suggest that they have not been in power and that they are seeking to govern. Bliar and Brown have had over 10 years to get things right, yet they have offended just about every section of British society.

If Labour had spent as much time on running the country as they did spinning and dealing with their internal strife - we might have seen some useful outcomes. As it is, post election, whatever the result, Gordon and his Labour cronies will still be wasting time and effort on navel gazing rather than facing up to the financial crisis.

Currently, Labour's casual disregard for the UK's enormous debt is behaviour akin to the Captain of the Titanic. We cannot, as a country, AFFORD TO ALLOW THE DEBT TO CONTINUE, Alistair Darling and Brown are blithely throwing debt upon debt without any regard for the legacy this country will face. Tough times are ahead and it needs honest and brave leadership.

We know for certain that Brown is not up to it. We also know that an unelected Spin Doctor in the form of 'Mandelscum' is currently running this country purely based upon efforts to keep a DISCREDITED LABOUR PARTY in power.

Come on people, make your vote count - GET RID OF BROWN AND THE BLIAR LEGACY - please!

I really cannot stop laughing having just read this article. Can't Labour understand it's over, they've blown it. No one in their right minded tax payer could possible think of voting Labour, unless of cause your one of the millions of civil servants in non-job, one of the millions of work shy lazy people enjoying life at the tax payers expense, or just plain stupid.

more fairness brown just has not got a clue, I work shifts making a product which brings in about 3000 pounds an hour for the tax man yet I`am only about just over £100 pounds a week better off than someone who is getting housing benifit , free roof tax etc , whats fair about that gordon

If these pledges are as good as the one the Labour Party gave about the referendum on the EU Constitution then they wont be worth the paper they are written on.

Just watched Gordan launch the pledges, his pink tie made me think when was the last time you saw him wearing a labour red tie?

For example on budget day he was he was in a purple tie.

Also no mention at the launch that the budget document states that next/this years spending review will be cutting a lot of departmental budgets by 25% and that on budget day Peter anounced 5-10billion of cuts this year including 4billion in the NHS budget.

Why are any Labour ministers allowed to stand for election at the next general election?

As I understand it bankrupts are not allowed to stand.

As CEO Brown and as the directors, his ministers, were all complicit in the bankruptcy of UK plc.

If they want to take part in the election they need to repay the debt they have run up, outside of their mandate, prior to election date.

What are the House of Lords doing about this? Will they go to the Queen?

Am I inspired - NO.

NuLabour has had 12 or more years to be fair and have failed miserably. As for giving us, the public, more control - that is down right ludicrous when every other day they bring in measures which strip up of any control we ever had. Not only do we have their crazy PC inspired ideas but we also have to bow before Europe.
I am English first, British a close second and never a European. Daily I read of ways in which we subjugate our way of life after foot stamping from Brussels.
Remember the stupid 'mishapen fruit and veg' saga. At long last Europe has had to agree what a farce it was. From little issues like that to fish quotas and stripping away our right to have laws of our own - this no longer feels like Britain.
Will NuLabour stand up to the 'United States of Europe'? Absolutely not.
We need strong government willing to tackle issues that matter to each and every one of us.

I never consider the case of saying, only doing. The pledges of Lab, Lib Dems and Cons have never, will never and shall never inspire me.

They all state the same pack of "wishes" which are no where near the truth.
Education, Education, NHS investment, crime lower than it has ever been. In real terms all have dropped well below what is expected from a civilised country. Education (no places for Uni Students), NHS (patients left to die in the corridors while the easy cases are treated to patronise the Gov figures), Crime elevated to one murder per day, rapes and muggings exponentially increased with a claim that more coppers are on the "beat" another out right lie. Immigration so out of control that even the Gov does not know, or care, how many criminals have entered the country. A fortune is being spent on their "human rights" while the Brit Citizens HR are ignored. Only way to get medical treatment now is to go to prison were the first class med treatment is at their disposal. I can't even get an appointment with my doc, have to go to out patients at the local hospital.

For this reason I will NEVER EVER vote for any of the big 3 again.
I only hope I have an alternative on my ballot paper.

Our troops have died as a result of underfunding and government incompetence, our children are poorly educated, criminals do not receive sufficient punishment and are free to offend again, the Police are hampered by targets as is the NHS.
With regard to protecting front line services, Health Trusts in the South East have plans to cut frontline jobs, cut back on beds and also essential operations.

I just watched Gordon Brown's speech from Nottingham and he is certainly all fired up for the General Election and I am not a Labour supporter!
He certainly made some good jokes at the expense of the Tories and I am sure that as the polls have started to show that Labour are more trusted on the economy than the Tories, for the first time in several years, that the election is going to be very close or even Labour could actually overtake them.
The Tories have just been so negative with their speeches in the last few months. They have rubbished Britain and have hardly given anything positive or policy proposals, other than ones that play on the voters distrust of the bankers and promising austerity.
When the election campaign is written in the future, maybe the Conservatives will have a lot of regrets as they never seem to learn from their mistakes as they always revert to negative messages and basically, being nasty...

We Had Major saying "we have lost touch with the people" after Thatcher demise Ditto Blair and now Brown.Until these grossly overpaid people are made truly accountable and not self regulating we will not have a true democracy. He claimed the Labour party does not represent vested interests. Yes, it does. It represents the public sector. As a struggling private sector entrepreneur that looks pretty vested to me. Election pledges? Pledging to fix everything they broke is hardly a good start to a new government. Nothing in there to inspire people to want to get up and make a difference.

The markets and the CBI are VERY nervous about Labour being relected.
Perhaps you don't remember previous Labour governments, they ALL end in the same way and the Conservatives have to make some very hard decisions to rebalance the economy, it will be no different this time but at least there will some optimism for private enterprise and small employers,

So Called pledges by Gordon Brown about Cancer test being delivered with in a week this is an old pledge and one they are not keeping, I recently went for test for stomach cancer and colon cancer I had the test the start of September and I was called to Derriford Hospital for the results of the test nearly 6 months later 21/01/2010, where I turned up for my appointment at 16.25 PM and I was kept waiting for over 2 hours before I was seen at 19.40 PM was I was met by a student doctor not a Doctor a student assistant where I was told test negative, but symptoms have still not been resolved and I have not been told contacted for any further examination.so still none the wiser, and as for promises of being transparent, if he is willing to be so transparent why will he not have an enquiries into the dispatches program sleez, and how Mandelson was told about National Express Coaches, I think anything a Politician says today is just full of lies and deceit none of them are truly truthful

Well, maybe it's a bit on the err wishful side, but seriously hold on tight if we get the conservatives ruling us...less money for all those who work really hard...yay...what a lot to look forward to eh! How can one believe a liar?

Why should we believe Labour's election promises now:

1997 - We will have a referendum on voting reform - report carried out and ditched
2001 - Student Top-up fees - "We will not introduce 'top-up' fees and have legislated to prevent them." We now have ever increasing fees charged to students, who come out of University with massive debts!
2005 - Referendum on EU Constitution - say no more!

After 13 years it is time to give this Government the Red Card!!

As far as I can make out all Brown's pledges amount to is "I'll tax those poor suckers who work for a living even more in order to provide even more for those who don't" This of course, doesn't include the disabled or pensioners.

Living in Newcastle I'm surrounded by so many people who won't work for a living - have never worked and will never work. They are more than well aware they can get everything they want without the hassle or responsibility or going to work. We have FIVE generations of unemployed in parts of this city (having babies of course increases benefits). But they ALWAYS vote Labour at general elections. ALWAYS - and I can't see this time being different. Turkeys are not likely to vote for Christmas.

Being honest we can't afford any more Labour government. They have decimated this country and I'm absolutely sure that Blair and Brown's place in history is guaranteed as the worst Prime Ministers this country has ever had. Bar none. What a legacy....a country destroy and in an even worse condition (by a country mile) than the last time they were in government.

Unfortunately as alternatives we have a Lib-Dem party that seem to live another planet and will promise you anything and a Tory party that has lost its identity and promises nothing. But vote for the candidate most likely to get Labour out. Only that way do we have any hope of a new start.

One of the pledges announced this morning was Brown is keeping Darling as Chancellor if he wins the election, so much for Vince Cable saying he would take the job in a hung parliament. It is about time that the Lib Dems realized that they are being conned and have absolutely no chance of being the kingpin in a hung parliament, as history shows the more seats Labour gets the less the Lib Dems gets, yet since turn of year the Lib Dems have sided with Labour on every issue on the economy and attacked the Tories at every chance, yet they make no inroad into the Tories and are only averaging 17-18%. This will loose them 20 - 40 seats as Lib Dems will vote Labour , as this is the position they have shown they aligned themselves to in order to keep Tories out, so even if there is a hung parliament the biggest 3rd party will be Others not Lib Dems.

After what the country has been put through by this Labour Government, they should never, ever be elected into power again.

They have ruined our ecomony, sent us into a terrible war, resulting in the deaths of countless young soldiers, with not a hope of winning, and, individually, got rich at the taxpayers expense.

Now, we keep hearing Gordon Brown telling us 'what the people want' - it's definitely not him or his henchmen!

Individuals of all parties have shown time and again that they only operate out of unrestrained and unending self-interest. I cannot believe that major revisions are not made to our utterly dysfunctional political system.

If they had kept their pledges from the last election then I might have been inspired.

Why is Brown promising all this now, after 13 years of a Labour goverment? he constantly bangs on about 'hard working families' and how he'll look after them - it's the hard working families that he continually taxes to the hilt to pay for the massive DWP bill (logically, who else can pay the taxes?), so all he spouts is pure hypocrisy !
If you want to look at the true state of the country, consider departmental budgets - if you added Health, Education and Defence together the total wouldn't come near what is spent on the DWP - and that gap is getting bigger.
Don't also forget that Brown's discredited 'spin-doctor', Charlie Whelan, is also back in Downing Street as the election looms, but in his official capacity as senior representative of UNITE - what does that tell you? - Fairness as a Labour pledge? - Do the maths, people......

To the person who mentioned that university students are coming out with debt, I am a student, I get no free funding and have to pay back the some 16,000 it has cost me over 4 years. However, why shouldn't I pay for this, I worked in the holidays to help to do so and I have got the benefit of a good qualification in the field I wish to work in. The way it is paid back is incredibly fair given what you get for the money. You pay about £7 a month once you start earning and the interest on it is practically non existent. I feel proud that I accepted no hand outs and will pay back every penny from my hard work. Labour brought in a sensible scheme that meant this was possible.

What do I think of Labour's election pledges? I'd give them 5 out of 10.

I was giving 5 out of 10 for Conservative pledges too, until I saw George Osborne last night on TV, and downgraded them to 2 out of 10!

The only politician who has inspired me with any confidence so far is Vince Cable!

Why has the BBC made Gordon Brown's election 'pledges' headline news while giving the story that more than two thirds of business leaders think that Alistair Darling is doing a bad job secondary prominence? More blatant pro-Labour bias from the BBC.

I've just tried to watch Gordon Brown's video of his speech at Nottingham University and got this message:- "The content of this video clip does not seem to be working" Congratulations must go to the Beeb, however by chance this was, for putting the right words in my mouth. No need to comment any further, it sums up both the Labour Party and Gordon Brown in one go!!

I don't believ Brown, Cameron, Clegg or anyone. No sooner are they in power, they will do U-turns. Thatcher was master at it, Blair an expert and Brown, well he turned so much one way or the other, that it is difficult to keep track of it.

Labour's election pledges do not include any measurable target. As usual they define success, borrowing less than they forecast or exceeding their own target. Stalinist Brown is like a Soviet leader congratulating the Party on heroic percentage increases in tractor production. No change is envisaged and no new idea is announced. All is 'jam tomorrow' and fingers crossed that the nobody remembers the last lot of pledges which included halving child poverty, reducing truancy, increasing social mobility, 'freeing up' banks to lend to British industry, and of course "British jobs for British workers"! Some 'pledges' such as those on increasing prosperity or on immigration imply that the current position that they have brought us to is unacceptable even to them.
Bankers, chief executives in the NHS, local authorities or the Metropolitan Police are the principal beneficiaries of Labour care and attention to the "British people", receiving protected pensions and bonuses.

Thatcher, Blair and Brown have destroyed the Great Britain of which I was once so proud replacing 'Honi soit qui mal y pense' with 'Do as you are told or else'!

Labour's pledges are frankly a little vague, just like political parties are most of the time when introducing these sorts of things. How are they going to go about all this? I don't think, like most ignorant people on this biased forum, that these are lies. It is very shallow to think such things of our national leaders. I believe that these are their true aims, but producing the end product is not always easy to achieve, and therefore is not always done...
New Labour has done alot of fantastic things over the last 13 years; (minimum wage, peace in northern Ireland, devolution, vastly better NHS and reduced waiting times, longest period of sustained low inflation growth since 60s, etc. etc. etc.), see: https://www.leedsnwlabour.co.uk/?q=leedsnw/labour/achievements . My local city of Manchester has change vastly for the better since the late 90s, thanks partly to New Labours policies. People should compare what they have now to back before 1997, and they would see that they are much better off now for them.
But, it is probably the right time to another party to step into the lime-light. Preferably a party that would put forward some radical reforms of parliament and the political system to get the average person interested and involved in politics once again...

I stopped believing a word Mr Brown said when he said we would get a referendum on the EU and when he arrived in #10, he ignored that pledge, and when he said there would be no more boom bust and jobs for British workers, my husband lost his job and is now forced to work part time because all the local full time jobs are taken up by migrants from the EU.
And when he said my kids would get a decent education and good quality nursery schooling, I didn't think he meant from the age of 2 1/2 so he could rake in the tax from the parents he forced back to work as a result.
Labour the party of the family? Gordon Brown looks more and more like the Sheriff of Nottingham trying to think of more ways to fleece us dry. Enough, begone and let someone else stuff up the country for a while!

The Soviet/Communist Party of Russia was arguably a "People's party" too - It spoke of "Fairness" (ie. Redistribution of wealth, Egalitarianism, Social Justice, Income Inequality, and all the other Socialist/Communist bromides), "Community" (above the individual), and put the public sector first (whilst stomping upon the private sector).

I would exhort every sensible person in the UK to vote out the entire compliment of MP's and replace them with sensible non careerists. The pledges of any given party aren't worth the breath or ink used to proclaim them.

A pre-election pledge made by Blair's Labour Party in 2005 was a statement that a national referendum would be held on UK's membership of the EU. The pledge to hold a referendum was dumped and the Lisbon Treaty was signed behind the electorate's backs. Labour's pledges are as squalid as the financial mess they have created.
