You Are The Ref has become a footballing institution since it first appeared in The People newspaper in 1957.

For over 50 years it has been entertaining and informing readers on the rules of the beautiful game.

You Are The Ref poses unusual refereeing dilemmas for the reader, who have to put themselves in the shoes (or boots) of the match officials and come up with answers to various scenarios, testing their knowledge of some of football's weird and wonderful laws.

The format has only slightly changed over the years, helping it become a cult classic during its time in Shoot! magazine and various national newspapers.

For the last 39 years, top officials have helped provide the answers to the situations, with Premier League referees' chief Keith Hackett now playing a vital part in its compilation.

One thing that has remained constant throughout 50 years of the comic strip is the artist and inspiration Paul Trevillion.

He was a teenager when he first had the idea and is still going strong as the creator of the stunningly detailed drawings that bring You Are The Ref to life and make them so unique.

For the first time You Are The Ref will be available from BBC Sport, during Euro 2008, with the chance for fans of the column to interact with it and to suggest scenarios throughout the tournament.
