Fabio's world

FabioFabio|14:13 UK time, Thursday, 28 October 2010

Alright! It's your man Fabio in the house.

This is my first of many blogs into my world!

I DJ all over the place but one of the best gigs over the last couple of weeks has to be Metalheadz at Cable in London… I love playing there. Also on the bill that night was Logistics, Commix, Heist and Noisia. Great crowd, good vibes heavy music! Drink of choice is vodka this weekend… although it can make me a little loud at times! What's changed?!

What do people think about the non-smoking in clubs?! Smoking definitely covered up a multitude of sins for some people... Get yourself some deodrant!

Person spraying deodorant

Some of you may not know I'm also a massive hip-hop & r&b fan.. So checked an r&b night in London on Sunday… great vibes! Tune of night 'Blowing Money' Rick Ross. Rick Rozay is killing it right now!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2MVzP4MaJ0

Make sure you keep tuned into BBC Radio 1Xtra where you get tune after tune after tune like this all day. https://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/

X Factor is back.. What's going on with that? You might think I'm not into it but you can't get away from it, plus it's always on the TV! I like to watch it when I'm doing the ironing! TreyC she's needs work on the voice but she's got suttin suttin!

Ok this started on the show… we started chatting about boys who wear those boots with their trousers tucked in!

I asked Pixie Lott about who was hanging in the Radio 1 Live Lounge with Greg James what she thought about it… and she thought undecided about it all..

Greg mentioned Dane Bowers is a fan and that clinched it, it’s a definite no-no for me!

Best Tune - Yo Girl - David Owen

Best Gig - Hospitality at Brixton - It was rammed in the venue and such a big night got Hospitality crew!.Loved seeing High Contrast and Danny byrd in full effect

Best Food
- Pizza at the moment anything with anchovies and capers is my bag!

PizzaBest Film: watched this again the other great such a great film loving Angelina Jolie of course!

And on a Fabio super tip everyone should check out The Wire it’s the best series ever.

Hello from Benji

Benji BBenji B|14:01 UK time, Tuesday, 26 October 2010

I'm thrilled to have made the move from BBC Radio 1Xtra to my new slot on Radio 1, 2-4am Wednesday nights into Thursday morning. Having been part of the 1Xtra family for eight years since the day the station went on the air in 2002, it's a blessing to be able to bring my loyal 1Xtra listeners with me to my new slot, as well as welcoming a whole new audience on Radio 1.

For those who aren't familiar with the music that I play, check the show on iPlayer and you will find that I try to represent future music across a variety of credible genres. In terms of dance, think of it as the deeper side of club music, whether that be house, hip-hop, dubstep, beats or electronic.

I've always endeavored to support emerging artists whether it be Flying Lotus, James Blake, Floating Points, Roska or Magnetic Man and the specialist output on Radio 1 has always been crucial in breaking new acts. It's a privilege to be part of this family.

First Ever Hard Dance Music Conference!!!

KutskiKutski|14:16 UK time, Monday, 25 October 2010

A bit of an industry blog this time, but I think it's relevant enough to not bore you all to sleep!

If you're not aware, last week was ADE in Amsterdam which is like Europe's answer to the Miami Music Conference. But more relevant to the hardcore crew, this year, for the first time a special HDE was held (Hard Dance Event), with all the major players from the world over making an appearance!

I took a wander over there, mainly just to be nosey and see what it was all about, but came away with an energised excitement about the scene.

Hearing nothing but ambitious plans for everything from hardcore raves in football stadiums to pioneering new genres of blistering beats to please (while inflicting damage to) your ears hehe...

Without giving away anyones secret plans, I'll just promise you 2011 will be a strong year for the harder styles!!!! Watch this space...

Plus, listen to my show from this week!

Ayoo!

Welcome to my 1st post on the Radio 1 Dance Blog. I'm looking to make this a regular ting so stay close... Life seems to be getting busier and more fun by the day. After coming back off my US tour and experiencing jet lag that left me waking up at 7pm (yes 7pm), gigs, studio and radio runnins have been rammed into every second of the week. I had to chance to work with one of my heroes, D Double E, who I've watched on 'grime DVDs' since I was 16. He came to my studio, made me laugh and absolutely battered the mic. I DJ'd in Paris other week which was mad fun, but the hotel was the most stink think I've ever seen; I'm no diva but check out this radiator for example of tramp..

The only thing to keep me sane was to find some wireless internet and watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXElh_VM0Uc

Speaking of videos, on of my favourite tunes of the year, '2 Bears - Church', has now got a video and its just as sweet as the tune in a really bizarre, shouldn't-admit style n fashion. I had a problem watching it 'cus actually started getting emotional which is a problem when your watching Care Bears... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_Mno22eVks

I played it on my In New DJs We Trust show last Thursday. Talking of the show, I had JME come through to show and help me along with a new feature called 'Toddla's T Time' where I have a cup of tea and someone comes take over for 5 mins. Listeners asked questions to the man himself via Facebook and he spat on Redlight's MDMA riddim, which was dutty!!!!!!

JME with Toddla T

On Friday I played alongside one of my heroes. Sir David 'Ram Jam' Rodigan... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR0oQwrlZD8

The Rider's Blog part 1

Post categories:

GrooveriderGrooverider|14:42 UK time, Thursday, 21 October 2010

Hello it's Grooverider here for my first ever blog on the Radio 1 Dance Blog spot.. Thought you guys might be missing me on here so decided I should start the Rider Blog on this page.

I've been out on the road, ya know Rider style... been a big month for birthdays! My birthday shout outs to MC Trigga & IC 3 who both had birthday bashes!

It's been Fresher's Week all over the UK so you students have been running me all over the shop including Gatecrasher Nottingham on the Valve Sound System with Adam F, Dillinger, Lemon D. It's a big look right now!

Goldie Watch.. Well my man Goldie didn't last long! I think it's a setup! As Goldie said, 'They were too busy eating pizzas rather than watching him'. Sell the jazz shoes!!

Gonna geek out now... I also went to the BPM show, which is a DJ technology showcase at the NEC Birmingham and for all you new DJ's and producers out there I would check it! I bumped into my mate DJ Friction who was on a panel but he looked like he had better things to do!

Took my daughter to her first live gig the other week. Which was at the huge Wembley Arena and in fact for the station I work on... BBC Radio 1Xtra Live. The show was awesome! We were rating Tinie Tempah, B.O.B but she fell asleep at N Dubz! Haha! (My girl got taste!)

Caught Sara Cox on the radio too.. Nice to hear her Northern tones! Ya sounding good girl!!!

I also took a trip to Germany - Innovation put a night on in Manhein it was jokes! I was invited to play! It was definitely one of the funniest weekends I have had in a while... some of the stories I can't write on here!! Hahaahha! But DJ Fantasy who lives 10 minutes from the airport nearly missed the flight... if it wasn't delayed he would have missed it! His girlfriend drove past the airport so he ended up taking the tube there.... What a plonker!

Just bumped into the man Zane Lowe in the Radio 1 specialist team office & we swapped some tunes. I made sure he was aware of the J Magik & Wickaman track I've been loving on the show called 'Save My Life' which is sure to be huge! He put me on to a guy called Maverick Sabre who I'm gonna check out this week!

Laura in the office also made some amazing cupcakes which I was lucky enough to try... check is a pic of me devouring one above!

GROOVE'S GOODIES:
Best food: Still on the Thai joints...It's all about a Chicken Thai red curry!
Best tune: Worlds End - Tyke
Hottest gig: Cambridge, Warning
Best film: Machete
If you missed the show on Saturday make sure you listen back.. I have A.I IN THE MIX and them talking about their new album!

Has dubstep gone commercial?

Annie NightingaleAnnie Nightingale|12:28 UK time, Wednesday, 20 October 2010

Annie Nightingale

Great excitement that the Magnetic Man album went straight in the chart at No 5. But then I had a tweet which said: "Now that dubstep has gone commercial, which way will it all splinter?".

Here's an example of how dubstep has recently caught the imagination of more mainstream artists, in this case, Marina and the Diamonds covering Magnetic Man in our very own Radio 1 Live Lounge:

One top five album and a Live Lounge cover for Magnetic Man could mean just some well deserved recognition rather than 'dubstep has gone commercial' - love to know what everyone thinks about this? Has it?

This week in the studio, I put together the second of two recent bootlegs for my forthcoming sets (in particular the huge 80,000 capacity Monster Massive event I'm playing on Saturday in Los Angeles). It's a trancey version of Radioactive by Kings of Leon. As a DJ, it's very important to have your own exclusive versions of tracks, and I've been making my own unauthorised remixes of big tunes for my sets for the last few years. Some of them are mash-ups, but the majority are set to brand new music. It was a very fiddly exercise, as (unlike most dance music) the BPM of the K.O.L. original wavers all over the place, making it a complicated exercise to lay over a new musical backdrop.

Gig-wise, after this Friday's BBC Radio 1 show I return to my residency at the Gallery @ the Ministry of Sound in London. I've not played for a couple of months, and there's something particularly special about spinning in your hometown (and not merely because I have an unusually easy journey back home afterwards...). I'm very excited, and equally stoked about flying to LA the following morning for Monster Massive, which is a huge part of the annual dance music calendar on the US West Coast.

If you missed the show last week then there's still time to listen on the iPlayer. Sweden's up & comer Marcus Schossow did the DJ Relay (ahead of his debut on the Essential Mix last Friday). And I had Richard Durand on the phone being interviewed by one of my listeners, Luke; In case you've not heard the show recently, I've started letting you guys interview the DJs En Route on the show, instead of me. Talking of which, if there's a DJ you'd really like to interview on my show in the coming weeks - someone you're off to see at a club or someone you're really loving at the moment - then drop me an email and tell me who & I might get you on the phone: [email protected]

Speak to you again soon! Jules.

Music we are loving

Becci AbbottBecci Abbott|13:24 UK time, Monday, 18 October 2010

Weekend over.... booooo

But Mondays in the office are not too bad for us...we get to go through our music-listening piles...for me there is only one album I have on repeat - Chilly Gonzales - Ivory Tower. I can't get enough of it...it's so different, and brilliantly crazy! Produced by Boys Noize, Chilly is Canadian and is an amazing pianist. The album is perfect listening for these autumnul nights. Favourite track on the album 'You Can Dance'. What do you guys think?

On Annie's show the legends that are Cassius mashed up the current #1 for us this week...and did a fantastic job on Cee-Lo Green's track 'Forget You'...here it is...

Also, Pete's Essential New Tune was from Gold Panda - Snow & Taxis...which is beautiful. Lucky Shiner is the album and that's definitely one we can recommend.

Other tracks we are loving from the shows- Magnetic Man ft John legend - Getting Nowhere, The 2 Bears - Church, Gyptian- Hold Yuh (Major Lazer Remix) and NERD - Hypnotize U- which was produced by Daft Punk.

Oooh and if you are a Daft Punk fan then you will be as excited as us by this... www.daftpunk.com

So as well as listening to music we start to prep this week's shows...which also includes ideas for a dance off in Annie Mac's show - the part of the show for the last 20 minutes which is themed and we get you lot to text in your dance moves. Have you any ideas for a themed dance off? Last week we had the $ dance off...in the past we have done a 'brass off', 'screwface off'...be great to get your ideas so let us know here!!

Jaymo & Andy George say 'hi'

Jaymo and Andy GeorgeJaymo and Andy George|17:15 UK time, Friday, 15 October 2010

It's been a frantic but amazing summer and the finale took place last weekend. Whilst Jaymo held down our closing party in Ibiza it was my job to hold the fort at our spiritual home, Moda; the club night we started nearly 4 years ago.

Our friend (and colleague!) Annie Mac was making the trip 150 miles up to Lincoln to play for us, along side fellow companions Doorly & Riva Starr (and an amazing new band called Monarchy!) It was a super crazy night & we thought we'd show you some pictures of the action too...

Pics from Moda

But, summer's officially over and 6 months of heavy rainfall/grey clouds/wind/snow (insert gloomy, cliche'd, british weather thoughts here) are about to descend over the UK.

We've been lucky enough to spend the past few months based in Ibiza, so the change in weather system has taken a little getting used to but we're so glad to be back. First thing first - to go through the months of post i'd missed from Radio 1 and home

There are so many amazing albums dropping right now. Highlights have been new Magnetic Man, Everything Everything, Chromeo, French Horn Rebellion, Drums of Death, Fenech-Soler (Basically this list could go on for a while).

With so much amazing new music around we were more excited than even to be back on In New DJ's We Trust last week. We've had wicked new disco from Rory Phillips, ear-shattering cut-up electro from BeatauCue, a dope blissed-out remix from Villa and the first play of Herve's remix of Mark Ronson.

Listen again to the show on the iPlayer now! Make sure you listen back to our show too!

About my Essential Mix

Post categories:

Marcus SchossowMarcus Schossow|15:52 UK time, Friday, 15 October 2010

My style has never been so wide as it is today. Over the last couple of years, I have been slowly blending everything together into one big sound, with inspiration from every subgenre. When i started out a couple of years ago, I wanted to combine house & melodic techno into my trance sets, and since then this is a style that has grown and grown. These days you not only see trance artists kissing the house scene, but also my fellow Swedes from Swedish House Mafia making out with trance scene... with tongues!

In this mix you will hear the newest trends from Sweden in terms of sound - techno, electro, house & trance - combined together all the way through. In this way, this mix represents how I DJ for the dancefloor. I've also added a few new bits and pieces from myself, including a new techno track "Checkmate", a filthy electro collab with Mike Hawkins called "Love Juice" and my new full-on trance tune with Leon Bolier! There is also a track in the mix from me called "Los Angeles" that is coming out on Tiesto's new label called "musical freedom". I hope you all will enjoy this mix! Let me know what you think!

Marcus

Coming up on tomorrow's show is Akabu plus 2000 & One.

Hi from Jules

Judge JulesJudge Jules|16:11 UK time, Tuesday, 12 October 2010

I was away in Asia at the start of the month, playing in Singapore & Tokyo...

But for the last week I've been back on home shores and, since it's early October, the last 7 days saw me play a succession of gigs aimed at the student fraternity. These included Leeds and Chester midweek, Lancaster tonight, plus an open-to-all visit to the mighty Syndicate superclub in Blackpool last Saturday.

As much as I love my job - all the gigs have been rammed and very loud - sleeping in the car (and broken sleep in general) in nothing like a proper night in your own bed; I've almost forgotten what it looks like.

On top of the great gigs, it's been one of the strongest and most consistent periods for new music in recent months - my cd wallet is bulging with so many great new tracks that it's been a struggle to fit them all into each of my sets and on the Radio 1 show. A great problem to have! Listen back to my show from Friday to hear the best of these new tracks, plus Afrojack getting interviewed by Chris from Belfast and Sean Tyas in the DJ Relay.

Happy Monday

Rachel BartonRachel Barton|16:13 UK time, Monday, 11 October 2010

2000 & One

Happy Monday one and all - hope you had a great weekend! So Monday's for me at Radio 1 HQ is a real organising day. I book guests and mixes for the shows I work on, we do the music reporting from the previous week, I listen to new tracks and start to think about what music to include in this week's programmes - lots of 'housekeeping' which is a nice start to the week.

It feels like there is loads of great music around right now, I put 4 new albums on my MP3 player last night to have a listen to this week to see what tracks are right for my shows - Danny Byrd, Maddslinky, Sh*t Robot & Gold Panda. But there are loads of really good singles & EP's around too. I often find that at this time of year - we've got over the summer madness and people have got back down to work in the studio, providing us all with brand new beats!

Also out this week is the much hyped Magnetic Man album which is brilliant. And of course they were in session last week for BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra, it was incredible with a string section complimenting amazing vocals from the likes of Katy B & Ms Dynamite. Check the videos of the 3 main singles 'I Need Air', 'Perfect Stranger' and 'Fire'.

On Pete's show on Friday we had 24 Hour Party People with Magnetic Man - it sounded a bit like this.

Or you can listen to the whole showand check the tracklist here.

So coming up this week on the shows I look after:

:: On Annie Nightingale we have a guest mix from Count & Sinden

:: On Annie Mac we have Mash Hits from Cassius and a mini mix from Starsmith

:: And on Pete Tong we have 24 Hour Party People with Joey Negro/Akabu & 15 Minutes Of Fame with 2000 & One (pictured above).
Have a great week!

How you doing there?
It's your friendly neighborhood ninja DJ....Jaguar Skills!
You good?
I've been busting it up and down the country recently, on my first UK tour. The Smash Up Tour.
It's been great...AND a sell out...so I can't have wished better than that!
As well as gigging, I was lucky enough to headline at my own festival. JAGFEST 2010.
I really thought it was going to be busier, but due to the fact that it was held in a secret location, which we only knew about on the day, hardly anyone showed up! Oh well. Drum & Bass superstar, Danny Byrd DID find it, however, and rocked the spot. So did my man Kutski, DJ@War and The Prototypes. Oh, and Dub-Step bad-boys, Torqux & Twist blew up the speakers, and I got some food poisoning from eating a this thing called a HOGPOT, or POTHOG, can't remember.
Anyway - selected highlights are available to listen to now, on the iplayer, so I suggest you drop what you're doing now, and check it out.
Me? I've got a mask to wash...see ya soon!
HooooOOOOOOO!!!!!

Hello lovely people..

Annie MacAnnie Mac|09:48 UK time, Friday, 8 October 2010

hope you're all well... i have woman flu. Like man flu it involves a lot of self sympathy and a lot of snuffling and sniffing and literally boxes and boxes of blackcurrant lemsip (other painkilling drinks are available). After a hectic weekend of djing around the UK, and a late night last night in Newcastle with DJ Zinc, Benga and DJ Doorly, (which culminated in Doorly singing Tom Jones to the whole club..don't ask me why i put him up to this but it definitely made sense at the time..) i am sitting here with a big red nose from too much nose blowing and i have just finished the final touches of the show. Oh boy. Get ready for 2 classic d&b minimixes, exclusive music recorded by Magnetic Man from their amazing Maida Vale session earlier in the week, new music from Danny Byrd, NERD, Prince Language, Screendeath, The Shoes and loads more..be there!!! 7pm! Tell your friends!! Your granny! Your postman! Your dog! Everyone must know! x

Back from the USA

Annie MacAnnie Mac|17:07 UK time, Friday, 1 October 2010

Hello! I'm back after 10 days gallivanting around North America and Canada on tour. I'm half a stone heavier due to eating some of the nicest food I've ever had in my life... pancakes, waffles, fried chicken, baked beans with burnt ends and cheesecake lollipops!

Fatty Mac! it was worth it though. Had some great gigs as well, it's always so good to travel half way across the world and meet people who listen religiously to the show. So as well as a ton of new tunes for you this week, we have Mini Mixes from Danny Byrd and Aeroplane. The Mini Mixes are a fantastic insight into the sound of an artist; sometimes they include all their influences, sometimes all their own stuff, sometimes it's just 5 minutes of music they're really into right now but they're always a brilliant snapshot of what that person is about. As always you can download the Mini Mixes from your phone or your computer and listen to them whenever you like, but the BBC are now giving you access to the mini mixes for 30 days after they're broadcast rather than the usual 7. Here's a link to the Mini Mixes available to download including the XX, Robyn, Azarie & III, Chromeo and Tensnake.

Download and enjoy!!

Paul van Dyk co-host!

Judge JulesJudge Jules|16:57 UK time, Friday, 1 October 2010

Right now I'm actually doing a mini-tour of Asia, but last week while Paul van Dyk was in town I dragged him in to the studio with me and got him to co-host my show with me. Paul took musical control of the show for an hour, answered a ton of listener's questions, chatted about what's going on in his world and played his favourite classic track. If you miss the show then you can listen again here, and check out this little video we shot while we were in the studio.
