Google announces Maps API v2

Bret Taylor, Product Manager for Google Maps, has announced the details of the second version of the Google Maps API.

The highlights of the update include:

• Smaller JavaScript download
• Additional zoom levels
• Extensions to the API to enable custom map controls and custom map types
• Debugging (yay!)
• New GLatLng class to construct non-reversed map points
• No page view limits
• 90-day notice should Google wish to start to advertising on the maps

It would appear V2 is backward-compatible with most existing calls to the V1 API, although you can check out the full upgrade documentation for details.
