Known for their brand of sexy, soulful house music, Birmingham-based record label Miss Moneypennys have taken a gamble with their latest signing from Wolverhampton. Currently living at the family home she shares with her mum and three sisters, care assistant, Diane Hazel has already become a bit of a minor celebrity in her home town, in the Eastfield district of Wolverhampton and that’s before she’s even released anything. Recalling the first time she was spotted by a fan, "I'd just clocked off from a long shift and I'm getting a taxi home in my works gear and the driver asked for my autograph and to hear me sing!" Having kept her triumph a secret from work colleagues, close friends and even members of her own family until she knew she'd definitely bagged a deal, Diane said: "I hadn't seen my picture in the local paper the night before like he had, and I looked mighty different. I nearly died of embarrassment!" Jazz-tinged voice and diva looks | | Diane Hazel |
On stage however, this 33 year old with her diva looks, an infectious laugh to scare a herd of hyenas and an unmistakable deep, jazz-tinged voice could bode well. But the music industry can be a rocky road to tread, with many a starry-eyed UK soulstress teetering over in her 10 inch high heels flat on their face before getting anywhere. So how does Diane think she will fair? "I've been in a whirl for the past couple of months and just want to do my best - that's all I can do really, I've searched long enough to try and make this happen and they eventually found me", a wicked smile flashing across her face, "It could all go pear shaped tomorrow , but I've got real belief in this track. It's manic, it’s an eye opener, but if I don't try, I won't know! Jim Shaft Ryan The record label have enlisted top international DJ Jim Shaft Ryan to produce her debut single entitled, "Let’s Get It On" with a planned release for late June 2006. | | Jim Shaft Ryan |
Providing the track's thumping baseline, jazzy rifts, and catchy chorus, he’s no stranger to breaking UK chart acts, whether producing the artists himself, testing tracks out on the clubbing faithful who pack out his sell out gigs eack week, or giving them an airing on his weekly radio show. A world away from Diane’s first foray into music, where she collaborated with a DJ collective from Shropshire, who've since split. Diane says, "They helped press my first ever track, although we couldn't afford to do anymore than about 10 vinyl copies, so it never got released, not even on the underground circuit." She goes on to say, "I was gutted and I still love that track to this day - and them - so when the time’s right maybe it might see the light of day." Plucked from relative obscurity, having done "the odd bit of karaoke and smoky Birmingham clubs", Diane is a breath of fresh air to the usual grunts and groans from some new breed of singers. Endearing yes, but its major UK radio airplay and ultimately the record buying public that will decide whether it really has all been worth it for Diane on a long round of promotion for this track. Exclusive play on BBC WM A recent tour of Africa and her own BBC local radio series proved a sure fire hit, winning column inches and fans alike and now it’s the turn of the UK to hear this diva. Let’s get it on! The first exclusive play of "Lets Get It On" will be heard on BBC WM 96.5 FM in The Danny Kelly Afternoon Show in summer 2006. Watch this space! |
