If you're looking for a quiet park to amble through, or a place to take the children to burn off some energy, Eastfield Park Doorstep Green is literally - on your doorstep. The new park opened in the summer, and has a multi-use games area, children’s play area, a nature and woodland feature and is wheelchair friendly. The site used to be an old brick yard, and after 3 years' work, has been transformed into the city's first public park for 30 years. You can find the park, which includes a nature conservation area, at Brickheath Road, Wolverhampton, WV1. | | Eastfield Park Doorstep Green |
Black Country website producer, Ciaran Ryan took a stroll down to the park to investigate...... I arrived, I thought, at park visiting peak-time: 2.30pm on a sunny Sunday, the day after Eastfield Park Doorstep Green's official opening by the Mayor. First impressions; it looks invitingly park-like. Sturdy fencing, new trees and tall grass. But are the gates locked? The area seems so empty. | | George and Mason, in the park |
The gates are not locked. The park is just very quiet. So quiet. I couldn't even hear any traffic. In the hour I spent wandering around the nature conservation area, looking at the deserted children's 'equipped play area', chasing butterflies, not sitting on the meeting-place seating, and reading the noticeboard (there's a lot of regulations on that noticeboard), I shared the whole new park with only six people. | | A 'multi-use' games area |
Four of whom were children, playing an extremely polite game of football, in the new ball game area, with special soft ground coating. You couldn't even hear the ball bounce. The other two, Mason and his uncle George, live nearby, but were only passing through. George knew why the park was so quiet. "In the daytime, they're in the big park [East Park]," he said. "Especially in this weather, it's got a big paddling pool." Mason likes Eastfield Park Doorstep Green: | | Play area |
"I've played a few games of football over here, it's better than playing in the street, like we used to." "Years ago this [the park] used to be an old brick yard." said George. "It's taken a couple of years to put together. It used to be a right mess, they used to burn cars over here. "It's [the park] a good thing, yeah, when they finish it. They've still got to do more - there's too much open space. This is a good place, better than it was, as long as they get people to look after it. They've got to have some sort of supervisor over here, especially at night time." I too, hope the park stays as pleasant as it is now. | | Eastfield Park Doorstep Green |
So, if you're tiring of Willenhall's or Low Hill's incessant social whirl, I say give the up-and-coming, not very noisy, Eastfield Park Doorstep Green a try. =========== Eastfield Park Doorstep Green, Brickheath Road, Wolverhampton.
