First, then, now subtraction stories
You can think of a number sentence a bit like a little story.
You can use first, then, now to subtract numbers and understand their connection to each other.
Let's look at an example.

What happened 'first'?
'First' there were 3 blocks.
'Then' what happened?
'Then' you take 1 away.
How many are there 'now'?
'Now' there are 2 blocks left.
You can write this as a number sentence like this:
3 - 1 = 2

First, then, now
You can use 'first, then, now' to help understand subtraction calculations.
'First' tells you how many objects there are to begin with.
'Then' tells you how many are taken away.
'Now' tells you how many are left.

- 'First' there were 9 cats.
- 'Then' 3 ran away.
- 'Now' there are 6 cats left.
You can write your 'first, then, now' story as a number sentence. Like this:
9 - 3 = 6
Example 1

- 'First' there were 4 apples.
- 'Then' 1 apple was eaten.
'Now' how many are there?
✓ Begin with 4 apples and then take one away to show that it was eaten.
There are 3 apples left.
4 - 1 = 3

Example 2

- 'First' there are 6 balloons.
- 'Then' 4 are blown away.
'Now' how many balloons are left?
✓ There are 2 left. You can show this with a number sentence:
6 - 4 = 2
The 6 shows how many balloons there are 'first'.
The 4 shows how many 'then' blew away.
The 2 shows how many there are 'now'.

Example 3

- 'First' there were 4 passengers on a train.
- 'Then' some of them got off.
- 'Now' there are just 2 passengers left on the train.
How many passengers got off the train?
✓ 2 passengers must have got off the train.
You need to work out what you subtract from 4 to make 2.
You can count back from 4 until you reach 2.
4 - 2 = 2
