CHILD 1:
I'm going to be showing you how to convert a measurement that's in centimetres into metres. So, let's get started.
First of all we're going to be doing 140 cm into metres.
So I think of it as:
100 cm is in one metre, therefore we'll have to divide 140 by 100.
And the way that you do that is by taking 140 and then moving the decimal point two places, because there are two zeros… one, two… to create 1.4 metres.
So we're going to do it for 175:
175 divided by 100 is 175.
Two decimal places yet again because two zeros… one, two… changing it to 1.75 metres.
This technique is useful if, for example, you've been measured in cm and you want to find out how tall you are in metres — it's quite useful.
Or if you have a smaller metre measurement and you want to convert it into cm — it's also quite useful for that as well. So you can use it in everyday life.
CHILD 2:
I want to find out how many litres are in my water bottle.
CHILD 3:
473.
CHILD 2:
We know that in one litre, there are 1000 millilitres.
So to get the quantity into litres, we need to divide 473 by 1000, which gives us 0.473 litres.
