Ordering by length and height

Part ofMathematics and NumeracyNumberYear 1

Ordering objects

You can order objects, people, animals, and lots of other things by height or length.

To talk about length, how long something is, you can use the words 'shortest' and 'longest'.

A bus labeled 'Longest' and a car labelled 'Shortest'

To talk about height, how tall something is, you can use the words 'shortest' and 'tallest'.

A big dog labelled 'Tallest' and a small cat labelled 'Shortest'.

Sometimes, two things can be the 'same length' or the 'same height' as each other.

Ordering by length

When you order objects by length, you arrange them from the shortest to the longest.

Lengths are measured sideways or lengthways.

To order them correctly, it’s important to line the objects up at one end so you can see their true lengths.

Image gallerySkip image gallerySlide1 of 3, There are three snakes of different lengths. An orange snake with a triangle pattern, a green spotty snake and a blue snake., Click or tap to look at how these snakes can be ordered by length.

So, when you order from shortest to longest, the blue snake will come first, then the red snake will come next, and the green snake will go last.

If you order from longest to shortest, the green snake will come first, then the red snake will come next, and the blue snake will go last.

Ordering by height

When you order objects by height, you arrange them from the shortest to the tallest.

Heights are measured from the bottom to the top.

Make sure the bottoms of the objects are all lined up on the same level so you can compare their heights correctly.

So, when you order them from shortest to tallest, the red building comes first, the purple building comes next, and the blue building goes last.

And if you order them from tallest to shortest, the blue building comes first, the purple building comes next, and the red building goes last.

Example 1

Three pencils of different lengths. The red pencil marked C at the bottom is the longest. The blue pencil in the middle marked B is the shortest. The green pencil marked A at the top is of a size between the other two pencils.

Order these pencils from the shortest to the longest.

Example 2

There are three children of differing heights, Roman is the tallest, Lily is the shortest and Omi is in-between the two.

Order these children from the tallest to the shortest.
