Ordering objects
You can order objects, people, animals, and lots of other things by height or length.
To talk about length, how long something is, you can use the words 'shortest' and 'longest'.

To talk about height, how tall something is, you can use the words 'shortest' and 'tallest'.

Sometimes, two things can be the 'same length' or the 'same height' as each other.

Ordering by length
When you order objects by length, you arrange them from the shortest to the longest.
Lengths are measured sideways or lengthways.
To order them correctly, it’s important to line the objects up at one end so you can see their true lengths.

So, when you order from shortest to longest, the blue snake will come first, then the red snake will come next, and the green snake will go last.
If you order from longest to shortest, the green snake will come first, then the red snake will come next, and the blue snake will go last.
Ordering by height
When you order objects by height, you arrange them from the shortest to the tallest.
Heights are measured from the bottom to the top.
Make sure the bottoms of the objects are all lined up on the same level so you can compare their heights correctly.

So, when you order them from shortest to tallest, the red building comes first, the purple building comes next, and the blue building goes last.
And if you order them from tallest to shortest, the blue building comes first, the purple building comes next, and the red building goes last.
Example 1

Order these pencils from the shortest to the longest.
✓ From the shortest to the longest the correct order is blue, green, red.
First you need to work out which pencil is the shortest.
You can see that the blue pencil is shorter than the green pencil and that the blue pencil is also shorter than the red pencil.
That means the blue pencil is the shortest. It goes in the first spot.
Now, you can work out the longest.
The red pencil is longer than the green pencil. You also know it's longer than the blue pencil.
So the red pencil is the longest. It goes in the last spot, and the green pencil goes in the middle.

Example 2

Order these children from the tallest to the shortest.
✓ From the tallest to the shortest, the correct order is Rohan, Omi, Lily.
First, figure out who is the tallest.
Rohan is taller than Omi. Rohan is also taller than Llly.
That means Rohan is the tallest. He goes in the first spot.
Now, figure out who is the shortest.
Lily is shorter than Omi. You also know she’s shorter than Rohan.
So, Lily is the shortest. She goes in the last spot and Omi goes in the middle.
